Founded as a field hospital for Lamordian soldiers following the Winter War in 695 BC, the Hoftman Hospital is one of Lamordia's most prestigious hospitals. Yet its prestige hides a dark and troubled history that continues into the present.

History

Centuries before Lamordia became a domain, the land Hoftman Hospital currently stands on was home to a vile cult that venerated a horrible fiend of great power called Malgorboth. The cult's twisted devotion motivated Malgorboth to send a horrid agent of its will, now known as simply the Lurker by the one man who knows of its existence, as a blessing to its cult. However, the cult gathered the attention of goodly clerics who dispersed the group and sealed the Lurker in the caves beneath. Centuries passed, and the forgotten ground was incorporated into Lamordia as the domain formed in 683 BC.

In 695 BC, Falkovnia invaded Lamordia. Though the invasion faltered by the January of the following year, the horrors of war did not leave Lamordia unscathed. To provide shelter and a place for healing for the wounded and unknowing of the land's dark past, Dr. Baltus Hoftmann founded the hospital the same year the war started. In 696 BC, a ceasefire was established, and Baron von Aubrecker financed the construction of a great medical facility on the grounds of the former field hospital. None knew the blood spilled in Falkovnia's ill-fated military endeavor awakened the dormant but still alive entity now trapped beneath the cellars of the hospital. It has since began to pray upon the dreams of the people housed in the hospital.

The Hospital Today

Dr. Berthold Hoftmann, the hospital's lead administrator, is highly respected as a pioneer in his field, though the weight of his work is said to be wearing on him. In truth, he suffers from the same malignant influence that beleaguers many of his patients in their dreams: that of the Lurker. Yet his rational mind cannot fathom this and explains it as some disease explicable by science. Dr. Hoftman is totally ignorant to the fact that the hospital's caretaker, Otto Krieger, is in league with the Lurker. For his part, Krieger is a corrupt and bitter man all on his own, for he sells the bodies of the deceased to Victor Mordenheim.

The Hospital is at present a rank 3 Sinkhole of Evil with a primary Taint of Fear and with a secondary Taint of Agony and Taint of Despair. This may well rise if the Lurker, a Greater Fihr, gains enough strength to break the bonds that hold it.
