On a tangential-but-kinda/sorta-still-related note, you're really good at finding imagery to depict the domains in canon, Mephisto, as well as the monsters that you imagine being in there. Any chance you could do that for more than just Hazlan but other domains (that might be the focus of a separate thread entirely)?

And on a more related note, I like to think that in any write-up of Bluetspur's true or false history, the El-Koth would be involved. Whether as a rival to the illithids or as a precursor species, who can say...

I think the El-Koch should be Mind-flayer made horrors, and not the very smart kind; like an Ankheg-Mind flayer hybrid or something.

This is a really good map of Toyalis, found in the FB profile named Ravenloft.

That is 400 to 500 hectares. Even with the lake taking a big chunk, it is a very large size for that city, I think. It could house easily 30,000 people even with that lake in it.
Make no mistake, it is a nice map. It is just too large for what I have in mind for it.

I believe you have miscalculated something. Don't forget that this is not a printed version so there can be a misunderstanding when it comes to map scale, depending on how much you zoom in.

I opened the file in photoshop and placed a grid for every inch and the city appears to be (including the lake) around 7.3152 hectares (73152 m2).

ERA Architects provides examples ranging from 12 people per hectare to 416 people per hectare. So the maximum population of Toyalis with this formula would be 3043 people. Toyalis is a city of 8200 people, so the city is definitely not large, but rather it is smaller.

Built-up Area Density in Istanbul in 2013 was 136 persons per hectare, decreasing at an average annual rate of -4% since 2002. The built-up area density in 2002 was 211 persons per hectare, decreasing at an average annual rate of -3.2% since 1990 when the built-up area density was 305.31 persons per hectare.

In another source İstanbul's density is 2934 people per square kilometer, If Toyalis had the same density as contemporary Istanbul it would house 214627 people. Istanbul is 5461 square kilometers (2109 sq mi) with 5343 square kilometers being on land. The central city area covers 1830 square kilometers.

By 500 CE, Constantinople had somewhere between 400000 and 500000 people, edging out its predecessor, Rome, for world's largest city. The urban area reached nearly 1400 hectares, and the population was between 300000 and 400000.

  • Year.- Popul.
  • 1000- 500,000
  • 1100- 400,000
  • 1200- 200,000
  • 1261- 100,000
  • 1350- 80,000
  • 1453- 45,000
  • 1500- 200,000

Every light blue square is 500sq.ft. and every small white square is 100sq.ft.

Below I have the same scaled against Castle Ravenloft, so it seems that the scale is OK as Castle Ravenloft is around the same size as some of the larger most important buildings in Toyalis, such as The Tables

Just 7 hectares? That's not a city... Look, reasonably Toyalis with its 8000 people should be like 50 to 80 hectares, without the lake. Sure, your numbers for Constantinople would suggest 200-250 people per hectare while I go for 100-150 people per hectare but Constantinople was HUGE so I would expect heavy urbanization.

Anyway... I don't see how I could have miscalculated that badly with the 400 hectares. I went with "110 pixels per inch" to be honest.
