For flavor, all contributors may want to reread their Dickens novels. For schools and orphanages, 'Nicholas Nickolby' and 'Oliver Twist'. For upper class decadance, 'Great Expectations' and the first part of 'Christmas Carol' For industrial and factory problems, 'Little Nell' and 'David Copperfield', and for street Life, 'Bleak House'.
Do us a favor Luv, Stick yer 'ead in a bucket a kick it!

So, gentlemen, that's how it is. Until Grissome.... resurfaces, I'm the acting president, and I say starting with this... anniversary festival, we run this city into the ground! :D

Manofevil, I agree that when I envision Paridon it is heavily influenced by Dickens and the 19th century...but that's at least a hundred years beyond the Renaissance definition of the canon. This is what I want to know- exactly what period should canon have in mind- what authors- Jane Austen? Or is she even too modern?

Would anyone mind, if i had my EWTF PC Buchvold get in on the Gaz? In other words, writing my submission in his character(With dread possibilities on sidebars).

I believe that that was being done for the Souragne Gazetteer; the only proviso was to make sure that the PC doesn't overwhelm the actual submission. I know that I wrote a small intro at the beginning of my article on the Ezran church for Gert; whether it will remain I don't know, but hey, I'm not going to cry about it. :P

If it is included there, there's no reason at all why you couldn't do it here. :D

One idea about the tech level is to do sort of a 'mixed' system.

Lamordia is very much based off of 18th-9th century switzerland and germany (although technically it would probably still be prussia). And yet, it remains renaissance. This is because only certain aspects of Lamordia are high tech (i.e. the breakthroughs).

When the campaign setting refers to Cultural levels, its generally refering to the domain after all. It's not a hard fast rule. For instance, Forlorn is CL 3, but this doesn't mean that walking into Forlorn with a firearm is going to mess up the space-time continuem. It's just that Forlorn in general is still in the Iron Age. There are always exceptions.

As Paridon is a nation of science, it will naturally have a few, select advances. In some cases, these advances are listed as dread possibilities (such as Williams train). In other cases, they can be made into the actual text, such as factories. Factories themselves aren't a 18th-19th century idea, its just that they weren't nearly as popular during the renaissance era. Factories aren't AGAINST the canon material, as there is no where stating that factories do not exist in Paridon. At the same time, factories are not too advanced for renaissance adventures: they were just technically not prominent during the renaissance age.

Remember everyone, Leonardo Divinci (sp?) had the theoretical drawings of a tank in his notes, and had he continued he might have succeeded. There are always those obscure cases were there was a break through. The CL9 simply means that society in general is still functioning in a renaissance age. One way we may emphasize this is through the class divide.

Good. Because that got cut. Not because it was bad but the shift out of first-person narrative was too sharp a break. I tried salvaging it but that only made it less of what you wrote.

You could but that is different for saying you should. If there is a very good in-character reason why the group splits into three and talks about three very different topics that, okay. As long as it doesn't detract from the Gazetteer.

Thank you for trying though, David. :) I'd already started writing the article and was nearly done when the suggestion was made, and it was too close to the deadline to think of re-writing it. :P

I'll agree with David that it should make sense in order for it to be included. A lot depends on the style of the Souragne Gazetteer. I honestly don't mean to be pragmatic, but the narrative plotline is best kept tucked underneath the purpose of the Gazetteer itself. And whatever that narrative plotline is, it's best kept as a parralell to the Van Rijn story.

Thanks , I'll write it IC

It should work out with what you said. Buchvold in EWTF is going to be travaling the land, working on the gaz project till the Scourange meeting. He won't stay too long in Priadorn, but long enough to reserch his submission. It won't detract from the Gaz, but will fit the stroyline(both of the gaz, and EWTF)

hehe,

Well, I'm sure when Mr. Buchvold is done in Priadorn, he can certainly make an appearance in Zherisia...

...Sorry, Machivelli, I had to say it...

We just also need to be careful about the narrative characters involved. William Blackmoor and Gertrude Kingsley sound like our best bets right now for the focus.

Back onto the Gaz,

We've been talking about including a section on the Urban Legends of Paridon. Would anyone have ideas to dedicate towards this section? We've got a couple of our own, but this section would be a great area for submissions.

I just wanted to pipe up about technology levels as well as literary inspiration for Paridon.

Dickens is high victorian, which means by then that the steam engine has been "perfected" enough to make trains, start figuring out the automobile (slowly) and most manufacturing plants have machines. the problem with Paridon and "industrialization: is mainly the lack of ressources - if you can't mine coal, you can't make enough steam. So, the technology is likely "out there" bt it's not practical yet, so it might be an oddity at best.

I think the Dickensian feel is better for Nosos than Paridon. Paridon is more likely to be late 18th century than 19th century. I agree though that pinpointing the technology level of Paridon is tough, though.

=-=-=-

On a related note, I think that Paridon has the potential to be a place, not only of scientific learning but of great (if isolated) artistic flourering. Rising middle class looking to be "cultrued" and aspring to gentry status, combined with ti's decent size are interesting to consider. (Then again, making paper for books is a problem - if you can;t feed people then paper is secondary.)

I don't know how I could contribute in this vein, but I think I might want to give some thought to "Arts" in Paridon...

I don't agree on this. The metaplot is the Frat's, with the rebellion of van Rijn and the attempt to locate and/or defuse the new Doomsday Device. They've already set it up in the Souragne Gazetteer, and it should be the consistent thread through the rest that are produced. If the new Souragne cell aren't coming to Paridon, the main figure would be ( personal guess here) Alfred Larner, Esteemed Brother and head of the Zherisian cell and an Esteemed Brother. We also don't know if van Rijn himself is going to have any say in the work; perhaps the Gaz moves back and forth between the two groups, in their different locales, each gathering different information and allies.

But let's wait for the new Gazetteer to see the new metaplot, and the level of involvement of PC's/alter-egos in the submissions.

This is one of the biggest problems with Paridon; there's a lot of assumptions surrounding it. Having Jack the Ripper under a new alias doesn't help the matter any; it invites associations with the Victorian era.

Don't forget that despite the lack of any timber, it does publish the Newsbill. If it could devote paper to a newspaper, it should be more than happy to create books.

And please do think about the arts! :D It is an awkward but interesting area. I can see literature as a great interest for this land (and look at all the 19th century novelists that arose, which influence our view of this land), but the other arts...I see them trying to compete with Dementlieu to show that they aren't philistines, but am curious as to how successful this attempt actually is.

Deal then. Sorry for the mix up.

It already looks like we're going to be having a two way reliable mist way between Paridon and Nosos. The canon material speaks a lot of how Malus Schelrus associates himself with a lot of businesses with which he gains profit for exploiting his own resources. In this regard, Nosos and Paridon are perfect business partners for each other.

I agree with Llana that Paridon's primary art would be literature. I also agree that Paridon should not outshine Dementlieu with art. I'd say more artisitc than Lamordia, but more practical than Dementlieu. Middleclass businessmen may very well be trying to becoe cultured by producing novels on their own theories. This also ties into Paridon's religion, as upper-middle classmen may write books as a sign of being spiritually superior beings.
