Archaeological findings in the Gazzetteers

Post by Ail »

The title is way-misleading, but I can't rephrase what I mean in more truthful and yet short words.

The point is this: I have noticed one example (I haven't read much Ravenloft, unfortunately) in Gaz 1 of an oblique reference to something in a pervious work, namely, the compassion of the Dawn Slayers to lycanthropes is there because in Vampire of the Mists Sasha Petrovic is in love for a woman that is later revealed to be a werewolf.

This made me aware that many things that appear in the Gaz1 intriguing and without explanation may be left overs, or simlpy references, to events or details that have been written in other previous books (that was the kind of archaeological findings).

What I wanted to know is if for example the Terg graffiti referred in Krezk, or even the Terg tower, for example, are explained in previous books and what other references like these are buried in the several gazzes or even otehr 3E books.

I am curious to know if you have spotted more like these.

Thanks

Oh, there are tons of these. The gaz writers did their homework. I don't think the terg towers specifically are, but off the top of my head:

gaz I:
azenwrath (cotn: created)
the ambrose compound (Death of a Darklord)
forfarmax (cotn: ghosts)
the howling clan (cotn: werewolves)
casimir and zhone clieous (heart of midnight)
leo dilisnya (I, Strahd)
jacqueline montarri (rlmcii)

gaz II:
the collapsed tower of nartok (tower of doom)
fennelstock and upton (cotn: ghosts)
salizzar and ludzig (rlmcii)

gaz III:
The westcotes mention (howls in the night)
fiends of chateaufeux (chilling tales)
port-a-lucine opera house and the diosa's (cotn:w)
Strahd the alchemist (I10)

gaz IV:
heavy influences from WBRB, KotBR, SotBR (all written by Lowder, the author of the Sithicus section)
heavy influences from TEE in the invidia section

gaz V:
claws of sekhma, and the clever grey malken inn (The enemy within)

There are lots more.... I'll let some others fill them in.

You're right, I had identified Leo and Jackie too. The others not, unfortunately. And what about subtler things which appear sometimes as harmless suggestions? I am a bit more interested in these, those that are not so obvious.

For instance, the fact that Vallaki is a city/village well off in occult knowledge could be a direct reference to the presence of the Kargatane bookshop there.
But that, I admit, is over guessing.

As for the other gazzes, I haven't read them.

hmm... for the subtler stuff I'd have to re-read. Lemme see if I can find anything quick..

There are the stone circles, seen in VotM.
Ah, here's one. p.15, voishlacka is vampire in Luktar. That's the word chanted by the creepy cursed chapel in Feast of Goblyns that can turn you into a vampire.
mentions of Inajira (from Roots of Evil) in the history section (although he's blatantly included in the appendix)
The Ba'al verzi are from I Strahd.
The Thaani are are a direct reference to the Ildi'than from Forgotten Lore, a secret society from Bluetspur.
p21 lists some Barovian noble families, most are from I6, I think, and some other old sources.
Lyssa's originally from Thoughts of Darkness.
I'm convinced the mystics in valaki are a nod to the bookshop as well as the astrological cults being a nod to the midway haven site.
The keepers of the black feather were first seen in forbidden lore.

Well that's all I see in the Barovia section. maybe I'll comb the other sections later...
