Lost One

Post by Dmmaster42 »

Does anyone know the stats for the template the Lost One? I can't find them anywhere.

I am not sure there is a 3e template.

The Ravenloft Core Rules say the following on pg. 74:

"If any of the character's mental ability scores
ever drop below 3, she becomes what is commonly
known in Ravenloft as a lost one — a walking
catatonic whose mind was shattered by memories
too horrible to bear. The character becomes an NPC
until she has at least a 3 in all mental ability scores;
until then, the character eats and drinks if fed, walks
if led, and may occasionally mumble some gibberish,
but otherwise she can take no meaningful actions.
The DM can shape a lost one's personality by
looking at which ability score has dropped to 1 or 2.
A lost one with minimal Intelligence may seem like
a cheery and friendly fellow, but he might have
absolutely no short-term memory. He is unable to
remember anything about anyone from one minute
to the next. A lost one with minimal Wisdom might
have a vibrant memory but would be completely
stymied by any kind of external task, such as
opening a door latch or changing his clothes. A lost
one with minimal Charisma might wander in a daze,
mumbling strange rhymes, and is seemingly unable
to register the existence of other creatures.
If any ability score drops to 0, the character slips
into complete catatonia (see "Ability Score Loss" in
the Dungeon Master's Guide). If all three ability
scores are raised above 0 again, the character wakes
up as a lost one."

I can convert an older version if you happen to know that. It doesn't need to be 3rd or 3.5 Edition. It can be 2nd Edition.

Second edition claims low Intelligence score, poor AC equal to street clothes, poor 'to hit' & damage, but with the potential to 'rage' under certain stimuli.
I only wish I had retired sooner!

The 2E "Lost One" stats presume a 0-level NPC for a base creature, which is problematic in 3E since "0-level" humans don't exist in the new system. You can simulate the old "Lost One" by making most of them (but certainly not all ) low-level commoners, and by making some of them subject to the Enraged effect of moderate Horror checks.

In fact, it might be a good idea to give every Lost One NPC a distinctive "trigger" that compels minor or moderate Horror checks, even in their delusional state, as this can provide hints as to what caused their madness and will make individual Lost Ones more memorable. A Lost One who shrieks and flees in terror at the sight of a dog is far different from one who flies into a violent rage at the sound of churchbells, and both are more interesting than the stereotypical "walking catatonic" who simply gets dragged along for the ride, passive and pathetic.

Keep in mind that, in the 3E system, all lost ones are created by failing Madness saves, and as such automatically carry a madness effect.

True, but the Horror effects are more interesting IMO. Madness effects are interesting to role-play, but a Lost One usually isn't coherent enough to demonstrate the nuances of madness to outside observers. A Lost One might stand there staring into space because she thinks she's a zombie, or that "It" will pounce on her if she moves, or that her feet have been rooted to the floor by the Secret Cosmic Masters, but if she's too impaired to explain any of the above, who can tell the difference...? :?
