*sigh* Could we please put the "magnetic compass" discussion in the "magnetic compass" thread? That IS what I split it off for.

Returning to universities: The only canon mention of University degrees I've seen is in VRA, where Lord de Casteelle signs off with his degrees--Ph.D in History, Ph.D. in Arcane Sciences. So I suppose both of those are available, at least for advanced study.

Here's something a little more on topic. I've roughed out the basic flavor I want each school to have. I'll flesh out the details of the courses and professors later. (I've limited myself to these 12 for sanity's sake!)

Academie de Richemulot – Pont-A-Museau, Richemulot – very similar in nature and structure to the University of Dementlieu, a little more relaxed environment

The Brautslava Institute – Viaki, Darkon – possibly created by cast-offs from Il Aluk, has a reputation for teaching forbidden knowledge and encouraging dangerous experiments, because of its relative isolation professors are given more leeway

Kantora College – Kantora, Nova Vaasa – small and ill-regarded, possibly created by Prince Othmar to bolster the prestige of his capital or somehow related to the Church of the Lawgiver

University of Karg – Karg, Darkon – 2nd oldest university (next to Il Aluk), became a haven for teachers and students after the Requiem, currently enjoying a new golden age due to influx of talent, rivals University of Dementlieu

University of Il Aluk – Il Aluk, Darkon – is the oldest and was once the most successful university in Darkon, now inaccessible due to the Shroud over Necropolis

University of Levkarest – Levkarest, Borca – created by Church of Ezra to educate its wandering anchorites, Ivana Boritsi has made many donations to it, its curriculum leans more towards the arts than sciences

University of Liffe – Armeikos, Liffe – a small college that has transformed into a large university after the island it was based on became part of the Nocturnal Sea, the quiet (and relatively safe) environment has become a big draw for more practical students and their families

University of Ludendorf – Ludendorf, Lamordia – premiere school of engineering and medicine, many students transfer from other universities to finish their studies here, has the absolute latest technology available and always encourages innovation

University of Matira Bay – Matira Bay, Darkon – a relatively new college that has grown along with the city, hosts foreign students from the various Islands of Terror, allows them to learn the language, customs, and sights of the Core, some professors of Il Aluk have made their way here also

University of Mordent – Mordentshire, Mordent - traditionally a small college that has recently expanded its enrollment, possible connection to the Church of Ezra, has very capable teachers but it is not highly sought out by students looking for a more cosmopolitan locale, kind of a back-up school

University of Dementlieu - Port-A-Lucine, Dementlieu – premiere school of the Core (since the Il Aluk disaster), has widest range of courses, draws largest amount of students

University of Tvashti – Tvashti, Sri Raji – most well-known school among the Islands of Terror, produces many professors and scholars that find their way to the Core

University of Il Aluk in Exile at Karg

Post by cure »

Personally, I am fond of the University of Il Aluk in Exile at Karg. Evidently non-canon and evidently a hotbed of activity in relation to efforts to pierce or even undo the death shroud hanging over the former capital. And Azalin Rex would have a manifest interest in funding such efforts.

Professor Abelhous Nicholis, who famously explored Forlorn, was away from the university doing field research when the Requiem occurred and afterward retreated with other escapees to Karg to try and pick up the pieces.

Note that Paridon has a university also. However, it'll likely be described in the Zherisia Survey, so you should probably wait until that's released before deciding where the U of P fits into the wider academic picture.

Actually, it might be an interesting idea to give Strahd an interest in foreign technology as Stoker's Dracula had. Perhaps he has a pocketwatch and a small collection of firearms. Bringing a clockwork-diorama featured in a grandfather clock might peak his interest.

Although who's to say his interest is in purchasing said item.

Hey, it's reanjr! Long time no see. Like, years and years. :) Good to have you back.

On topic--the medieval countries of Ravenloft would have a general low level of technology, but wealthy individuals might have relatively high-tech possessions. Unless you want to rule that the national character of Barovians is such that they have an innate dislike of high tech, which is feasible; after all, if we take the "domain reflects darklord" idea and apply it strongly, a national inclination of that sort is perfectly explicable.

Regarding the university in Paridon... I'll leave those details to whoever is writing it up in the gazetteer.

... However, if that author would like to give me any pointers for my project, I wouldn't complain.

FWIW, Strahd already has one "high-tech" toy, namely his pipe organ. But he seldom bothers to play it anymore, at least according to VotM, and other such gadgetry would probably fail to hold his interest for long, if an item he'd found quite enjoyable in life doesn't. OTOH, having a collection of devices that just sit there gathering dust, along with the rest of his castle, would be a nice touch.
