Supernatural, the tv serie

Post by Joël of the FoS »

Anybody else dig this serie? It's about two brothers looking for their father, and meanwhile doing familly business: finding and eliminating supernatural horrors in our real world.

It's very good IMHO, and most episodes could be the base of a short but cool treck in RL. Many myths are explored like Bloody Mary, the Scarecrow, all kinds of phantoms, etc. Fun to watch!

Ah, this is the second thread that I know of about one of my favorite series on the CW. Absolutely wonderful show, and I've loved it since the pilot episode. It seems to me that around the third season of a series is when it seems to fall apart. Not sure as to why...

Hopefully it won't happen to the Winchesters, eh?

I've watched that show a bit, though I've lost track of the plotline. It rather reminds me of the great-granddaddy of original horror RPGs: Pacesetter's Chill from the mid-80s. That game had a lot of "urban legend" sorts of monsters in it, too.

I watched the first season, but kinda' lost interest sometime in the second season. Is this third season shaping up well?
I only wish I had retired sooner!

I have never seen it, but after your comments I might start! I have a question though, how they eliminate the supernatural horrors? They have superpowers or something?
- The first 2 Feats a wizard should take are "point blank shot" and "Precise shot"!
- W H A T ! ? !
- Or they should NEVER memorize rays!

Mostly Van-Richten-style. They figure out what the hairy heck a monster is, find out its weaknesses, and use them to destroy or banish it.

What do you think about them looking on the internet for clues as to demons and that, Roti?

Heh heh. I keep waiting for them to stumble over the FoS website, when they google "vampire weaknesses" or something similar....

Yes then we can get a really big publicity stunt from Supernatural by them showing our site

Actually, there are TV shows (usually "cult classic" types) whose writers and casts toss a bone to their fans onscreen once in a while. But if the Supernatural crew wanted to do that, they'd do it for a show-specific fan website or club, not us.

Here's something I don't think I've told folks here, yet: My sister's name actually appears onscreen in an episode of the 90s vampire-detective series Forever Knight. (Yes, that Moonlight thing has been done before, and repeatedly too. ) The prop department needed a list of cadavers for a scene set in the city morgue, so they gave a bunch of series fans from the online community a moment in the spotlight. My kid sister, who was nuts about that show, was included on the list of dead bodies! :D

(Err... maybe that's not the best thing to be posting smilies about. Except she loved it, so why not? )

I've just seen season 1, episode 1-14. My sister gave me the season 1 DVD box (so don't put spoilers on episodes after this one, please!). So far, I think it's great. I can't say a thing for season 2 and 3 CatmanJim, but usually, these things get less interesting as there are less cool myths they can exploit.

What I like so far is how they get rid of the creature - i.e. the research (and their discussion about it is always fun for a DM looking for inspiration IMHO), and all the red herrings they follow before getting it right.

The twist on Bloody Mary (the urban legend - say it three times in front of a mirror and she will kill you) for example was fun:

- this version of BM attacks not the person who summoned it, but the nearest person with a dark secret (murder, etc.)
- she is bound to a specific mirror in front of which she was killed (link to cool superstition of when someone dies in a house, you cover the mirrors so the spirit isn't trapped in it).
- discussion between heroes on how mirrors reveal secrets (a mirror of the soul), and that is why it is bad luck of breaking them.
- to destroy the mirror in front of which she was killed must be the clue to destroy her ... (or is it? not gonna spoil it ;) )

This is stealable nearly as is, and worthy of a fun short RL adventure.

Most episodes are as interesting for RL, except when dealing too much with modern technology (the plane crashing devil, for ex.).

I sometimes have the impression that they are into horror RPG :)

Here's something that you may find interesting Joël, (and everyone else that's a fan and a DM.) I've been toying with the idea of picking up a copy when I get the chance...

If someone could make this into a hotlink and tell me how to do it, I'd be much obliged. Thanks mods!
