Well, the first Vampire Hunter D film I found a little disappointing, to be frank. The character was really interesting, but storyline was a little predictable and the animation was really cartoony.
But the second film, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust was so much better. They combined crisp anime-style drawings with computer generated backgrounds in some scenes to give the film a beautiful look. Voice acting and storyline was much better as well. The Wikipedia article doesn't do it justice!

I love both the VHD movies, both are suited in some way or other. Those the first was more "cartoony" (it was made in 1984, when animation design was nowhere near as advanced as it was when Bloodlust was made), it still holds elements with the outlook of the general populace and their superstitions.
The 1926 Phantom of the Opera with Lon Chaney Jr. is a long-time favourite of mine where Ravenloft is concerned, as are Karloff's The Mummy and The Wolfman.
Hound of the Baskervilles with Basil Rathbone is great for Gothic Earth.
The 1986 Princess of Darkness, a truly great Wes Craven movie to say the least. Wonderful for areas where science may dip into the supernatural and raise something that shouldn't be...
Gormenghast, nuff said.
The Gift, it was very dramatic and puleld me in, exactly what I expect of any good Ravenloft premise.
Hammer Films' The Gorgon.
The Haunted.
The Haunting (either version).
1968 Night of the Living Dead (atmoshpere anyone?)
The Thing.
And, I'm out... for now at least.
There, and I got the whole way without mentioning Chinese Ghost Story, Ring, or The Eye... poop.

A movie I saw about a 2 months ago which I thought was really good for Ravenloft was the movie Perfume. It's about a man who has an incredible sense of smell, and just loves to smell everything. He eventually smells something that he can't resist: a woman's scent. He becomes a perfumer's apprentice to try to "capture" the scent, and eventually he turns to... well, its a good movie, I won't ruin it. The ending is the weirdest thing I have ever seen.

I was watching Miller's Crossing the other night. I could see it as the Brain and D'Honaire's struggle for power in Port A'Lucine. Tom must be Helene DeSuis. Leo is Dominic, and the Italian (who's name escapes me) might be the Brain.

I saw that film too. The ending was kind of Ravenloftian, too.Ornum wrote:Cemetery Man
No, not for the overall atmosphere, but the general idea behind it. In a place where the dead come back as zombies after seven days, the local mayor has hired a man to actually live in the cemetery and kill them as they rise before they can escape into the community.
