Tarlyn, unless Norzak fumbled his sense motive roll, I wouldn't think he'd have any problem telling that Dorgio's very interested in hearing or learning more about the artifact.

Ewan, Dorgio's making a knowledge (arcana) attempt to see if he's heard of anything like an enchanted mirror.

Oh hey, waaaaay back you mentioned something about letting us know the differences between RL cannon and your campaign world. Is there anything significantly different besides the size of this city?

Yes, several things:

All map distances in the Core and adjacent domains are tripled! In many cases, urban populations remain about the same , but keep in mind there are often smaller settlements not shown on the ''big map.'' There's a LOT more wilderness in my Ravenloft, with the major cities in some regions constituting something like the ''points of light'' from 4E. [don't worry, I'm not going to swittch to 4E! ]

Guns are a bit cheaper than in the official books, although many nations still favor the old school- bows and crossbows [remember , wars are infrequent and usually skirmishing affairs, so firepower supieriority is less important].

No Sheriff Von Zarovich.

Arkandale is bigger, and includes the back country region of Verbrek. Half of the land is wilderness/fronier, with log cabin dwelling hillfolk, and the farmers and craftsmen of the towns and plantations in the more civilized Musarde Valley. It's very much inspired by Andrew Wyatt's Old South reworking of the domain. They have enourmous riverboats[ steam tech with a little wizard magic tossed in!].

Vlad Drakov isn't titled 'Kingfuhrer', just King of Falkovnia.

I really ought to have mentioned one of the HUGE differences-- there is no NECROPOLIS! Il Aluk remains a city of the living. The events of the Grim Harvest played out rather differently, and Azalin's master plan never came to fruition- not that any of that is public knowledge.

There was still a period where Azalin Rex was absent, and Darkon threatened to splinter in several smaller realms. Il Aluk fell under the control of the Kargat, who ruled through a puppet government of merchants and noblemen. When Azalin returned from wherever it was he had gone, he quickly restored his rule over the whole country.

You can tell that my character is laced with 21st century sensibilities because even though he's from a Middle Age domain and hanging around in a Renaissance domain, he still goes outside to smoke.

Smoking is popular in several lands.

Arkandale is the main tobacco producer. Arkandale tobacco is generally considered quite good, and is a major cash crop. Men in Arkandale smoke, but ladies almost never do [not amongst the upper classes, anyway].

Pipes are a common way of smoking. Richemuloise smokers often use pipes fashioned of riverbottom clay. Arkandalers often use corncobs to make pipes. Kartakans tend to favor elaborately carved meerschaums.

Hazlanis smoke both nergillahs and cheroots [waterpipes and cigarillos, respectively]. They flavor their tobacco with apple, cinnamon, etc.

Paper cigarillos were invented, according to legend, by Dementlieuse militiamen. The soliders had been issued newfangled muskets, with papers to make cartridges of black powder and lead ball. They took to using the leftover papers for rolling their leaf.


There are supposedly magicians who have come up with magical uses for tobacco.
