You might make a prelude to the adventure using the jealous lover/murderer transformed into a rushlight (the fiery undead from Denizens of Dread). Perhaps in his anger he was sloppy and died in his own arson. Now as an evil undead spirit he stalks the relatives of his lover that cursed him, as a sort of retribution for the curse she gave him.
