Not true, I'm afraid; there's no set proportion of a book you can legally share without violating copyright, and certainly as much as 10% could get you in serious trouble. Technically, even sharing a single paragraph could be enough to get you sued. In practice, I really doubt WotC would bother to go after someone for sharing a copy of part of an out-of-print book like that, as long as it wasn't done too publically or too widely, but they would be in their legal rights to bring suit for it.
Legally u can copy about 10% of any book, if this weren't legal how there would be on amazon.com the "first chapter thing"? Of course you cannot sale this 10%.
Besides...
what happend to ravenloft in this 3rd edition, i wouldn't both if someone shared all the 2nd edition stuff, since the line is broken (no island of terrors, incomplete domains description, incomplete darklord book) and some books are money stealers: heroes of light / champions of darkness, and with 3.5: Ravenloft campaign setting 3.0, Denizens of darkness, and with the gazzetters: Secret of the dread realms.
I apology be saying this, i know there was hardwork behind it and there are great books like the gazzetteers, van richtens, but one thing is true: How u suppose to "ressurect" the setting, which major supplents are a LONG time Out Of Print and attract new players without having the basic stuff: full domains description, full darklord description? It's like to make the setting a golem, since it was alive but... without soul, or a broken soul.
Ok, may be said that there was too much stuff, but f..., it wasn't needed to make a full density description of all domains and all darklords, but basic description like made in Domains would be welcome, and the logically first thing to do, them make supplements with deep descritpion of each one.
But what we got: prestige classes (witch hunter in Secrets OHGOD!, turned monster hunter in PHB), and a bunch of npcs that aren't so important like the Darklord and his minions (who the hell came: sheriff von Zarovich?!)
Sorry for my poor english, but this broken 3rd edition Ravenloft sometimes makes me very angry, since it is sad to see the setting that u like so .... broken.
PS1: I am strongly against piracy.
PS2: that the dark powers curse you if u come and say that the DMG has description of all darklords.
PS3: don't come and say u can get most supplements on e-bay or amazon.com (used), since not all own international credit card, courage to buy used stuff and money to pay the ship&handling of this kind of purchase.
