Karim and Franz both see Alain, maybe thirty yards away, through the trees. He seems alright.

I didn't know if there was a commonly accepted word like "Earth" that they used.

Oh, and bologna on the "he seems alright." :P.

'The World' or 'the Land' would be the most common names for the demiplane as a whole. This is because, to the great majority of people, the world in which the live is the only world of which they have certain knowledge.

Now, some cultures have traditions about 'the old homeland beyond the mists'- but it's not always clear that such homelands were actually seperate worlds, and not just far away lands on the same world.

The Vaasi Church of the Lawgiver teaches that the old world was destroyed by the Lawgiver, and this world is the newer world given to mortal men.

Scholars like Benn may have read accounts of 'outlanders' who claimed to be from 'alternate universes', 'round planets' and other such strange places. The great Doctor Van Richten even gave some creedence to such notions, or so some sources would indicate. Other scholars, more conservative, tend to write off such talk as the babblings of madmen, hoaxes, or the confused narratives of lost island-folk. As no one has yet visited another world and returned with some kind of proof of the feat, the question remains open.

Common people in various countries may tell garbled accounts of Toril, Krynn, etc- these legendary places are sort of like our ideas of Shangri-La, Cockaigne, Prester John's Kingdom, the Earthly Paradise, Atlantis, etc. They might be real places that are simply 'very far away, they might be vanished countries belonging to the distant past, or they might be 'just fairy-tales'.
