Totally from Gates of Fire. I haven't seen anybody else call a butt cap a lizard-sticker, but I like the turn of phrase.

Suicide's "darning needles" are pretty cool, too.

Suicide was a great character.

He also has the hands-down best set of lines in the book (you know which ones). I won't quote it here, because not all the group has read Gates of Fire.

Just so I get it clear, Steven Pressfield's 300? That was a cool one.

GoF= novel by Steven Pressfield.

Gates of Fire is to 300 what the King James Bible is to Veggie-tales. Unless you count the Burning Bush, there aren't a lot of talking vegetables in the Bible. The Persians at Thermopylae (or anywhere) didn't have war rhinos, either.
Read/look at 300 for a fun-but-silly portrayal of Spartans as superheroes killing boatloads of evil ninjas and deformed freaks. Read Gates of Fire for a well-written, well-researched historical novel that describes one of the great battles of the ancient world and the men who fought it.

Nah, read the novel a while back. Might shock you, but I didn't like it too much. Reminded me too much of Rosemary Sutcliff's Eagle of the Ninth.
(Not because I'd 300 that much. All that movie really did was introducing me to kettlebell training.)

Yeah, very, VERY similar in style. (The whole series, for that matter.)

Not that GoF was bad - all to the contrary. I am probably just spoiled for novels set in the antique era.
BTW, go rent that movie CENTURION! Big sandal slashfest, but of the kind that one can watch with delight.

So far so good. I want to know more about Danys and her buddah! And why dire wolves are there and haven't been seen in years. Also the wildlings and others, I wanna know more about them too!
