Toys in the Vault

Once upon a time, as these stories go, there was a learned man who doted on his children. Desiring both to entertain them and stimulate their creativity, he went to his workroom and there created the most wonderful toys! Little bricks of a mysterious, coloured material that could be fitted together to make just about anything!
The learned man's children were delighted by this creation, and they played to their hearts' content. However, the worlds they created out of coloured bricks seemed empty without inhabitants. Seeing his beloved children's dissatisfaction and recognizing it for what it was, the learned man again went to his workroom.
What he did next might, perhaps, better not have been done. But his children delighted in the new creation, and so the learned man wondered whether there might not be a market for such things...
Who here hasn't had fun with a certain (trademarked) game, creating buildings, vehicles and whole landscapes out of those coloured plastic bricks? And who hasn't walked those charming little figures through those creations, giving them voice and spinning adventures for them?
Now imagine a Lamordian scientist: intellectually brilliant; supremely elevated above primitive notions like good and evil; dismissive of notions that people with the capacity to do what they want should refrain from doing so out of notions of ethics and morals.
It is now anyone's guess what the true origins are of the Mi'fig, fine-sized little beings naturally suited to inhabiting the worlds created out of those coloured bricks. Maybe the learned man grew their ancestors in vats. Maybe he painstakingly grafted flesh to inanimate matter. Maybe he even created a scientific device capable of granting wishes.
Fact is, the angular little mannikins exist.
They are alive enough to have souls, to create offspring, to think and feel.
And the learned man has been breeding and selling them abroad. They are still very expensive, but their capacity to reproduce semi-naturally means the prices are gradually dropping off as the learned man is losing the monopoly.
Children love playing with them; creating landscapes and scenarios for them to inhabit. Some military people of a theoretical mindset enjoy releasing them in scenarios they have prepared, to see how civilians might respond. Of course there are sadists who just enjoy tormenting small things. At least one wizard is experimenting on a colony to see whether he could grow larger versions. And at least one king keeps a colony as a miniature reflection of his kingdom out of jaded amusement.

Reproduction: Mi'fig reproduction might seem cutesy to humanoids and the like, but is very serious to them.
If two or more Mi'fig wish to reproduce, they must first gather sufficient material (bricks and the like) to create a new body. They tend to be sticklers for finding the best quality material.
Once the materials are secured, the Mi'fig pin and suspend those materials between them while they link hands. To humanoids, it looks as though the Mi'fig are hugging their potential child while holding hands, but a lot more is going on: Mi'fig who wish to be parents actually infuse the chosen materials with their own lifeforce.
Dread Possibility: The Outsiders
More to come...
