New type of bane weapons

Post by alhoon »

Well, a +1 undead bane weapon is considered a +2 weapon, costing 4000 gp, 320 XP to make in normal D&D worlds. It deals +2d6 damage to undead and gives a total +3 to hit and damage rolls against undead.
IMC the undead bane enchantment is considered a +2 enchantment. Also I double the costs of magic items in Ravenloft so a +1 undead bane weapon would cost 18000 gp and 1440 XP to make.

To equip characters in an undead-hunting group with magic weapons I defined the following:

- Lesser undead bane weapons. A +1 lesser undead bane weapon, deals +1d6 damage and gives a +2 to hit/damage rolls. It is considered a +2 weapon. Its cost would be 8000 gp and 640 XP.

- Variant undead bane weapons like: Walking dead bane weapons, ancient dead bane weapons, ghost bane weapons etc. All these also give a +2 bonus to hit/damage rolls against all undead types, but give the +2d6 damage bonus only against the variant undead type they are designed for.

You could have bane weapons for members of a certain religion or organization. Maybe pious or impious weapons that affect clerics, paladins and blackguards or characters with no patron deity, respectively.

 WOW! That's great! I mean, that this is indeed great as it has deep adventure possibilities!

A society that wants religions to eclipse and makes weapons against clerics is an interesting antagonist. Not only because it has weapons that harm clerics of course, but think! For a secret society to produce such weapons to equip its elite cleric assassins, even if it is a rich one, there must be a a reason. So they make interesting foes burning as they are with hate for clerics and an interesting plot as to why they hate clerics.

Makes me wonder what would happen if the Church of Ezra had access to these weapons and decided to stamp out other rival religions so that they could get their faith the truly dominant in the Core ;)

In Darkon perhaps, where the crumbling Eternal Order is rivaled by the Church of Ezra? In Darkon, both these religions are evil and believe that only the faithful can save the world. Eternal Order and Ezra both place the Requiem as a punishment for lack of faith.

Perhaps the introduction of such faith-bane weapons would be a means of destroying the unbelievers?
Or, perhaps both sides are given such weapons with the expressed purpose to destroy each other?
"Arrogant mortal! You are in my world now and you will never leave this attic alive! I will destroy you, and then I will possess she whom you love the most. And there is not a single thing in the world you can do to stop me!"

I was thinking that one side would have these weapons and use them as a symbol of how their faith is superior to the other's and the true faith people should follow ;)

Also, a religion need not need to be fundamentally evil to act this way, just powerhungry.

Not all bane weapons are of equal importance. IMC I mostly use undead, humans, aberations and fey as enemies.
Since Dragons are fairly rare IMC I kept Dragon slaying as +1 enchantment.
