I finally saw this yesterday. After months of waiting it arrived here in Edmonton in the local art-house theatre for a four-day screening. Glee.

It was beautiful and a joy to watch, so much of it (almost all really) looked like McKean's art. The sets and make-up were great and the backgrounds were starkly original.

The story itself was very Gaiman with some fun humour and an ethereal fairy-tale feel. The plot itself was light, almost non-existant, with the characters led by luck and blundering into some sembelance of progress. God has very heavy hand in this story from all the Deus Ex Machina. But Gaiman has never been a plot person, it's all about the telling of the story (or the nature of story itself) not the structure of the story. Really it was just an excuse to send the characters on a journey to show as much funkiness as possible.

Alot of CG though. More than LotR and almost as much as Sky Captain or Sin City. It's amazing what they can do now.

I got he DVD and watched it last night, it was really amazing.

Its too bad that it didn't get more publicity, it could have taken some of the awards away from the crappy movies at the Oscars.

I liked it well enough, though I think there was one MAJOR misfire in tone (involving a Carpenters song). I probably would've been more in love with it had it come out when I was in high school or college.
