Hello,

I am new to this forum, just signed in. My real name is Bastiaan.
I am into RPG for about 17 years of which Ravenloft remains my absolute favourite game setting. I live in the Netherlands and work as Actor and Storyteller.

My first question is this: How large is the Core? How long does one travel across the lands, from one end to another, just how big are the lands?

Short answer- As big as your campaign needs it to be.

Long answer- The authors of ravenloft have left the exact size perposely unwritten so the DM can make it anyth size he/she wants.

My answer- I like to make the entire core roughly half the size of North America across and just as far up and down. Travel time is about three months during the good seasons from Mordentshire to Egertus taking a set path following the river and using horses and boats. If you travel by foot from coast to coast it can take over a year.

Hey, welcome!

To complete Jasper's answer, the authors have suggested a scale: the inside cover maps in the Ravenloft Campaign Setting and the Ravenloft Player’s Handbook have a suggested scale of 20-25 miles per inch.

That is the one I use.

I use 1"=50 miles to make the Core 4 times as large as Switzerland and I multiply the population by Roughly 4 times.
