I for my part would be quicker in drawing a connection between RL and FR ,
but since we REAL D&D players all know that Greyhawk is the one true thing,
it might be worth a look for you.

Personally, I like the idea that the Von Zarovich homeworld isn't any of the published TSR worlds. The Mists have got a whole multiverse to draw upon: why should all the big baddies have to come from a place with a TSR copyright symbol hovering over it?

That means Azalin and Strahd came from the same homeworld.

And given that Strahd predates Azalin by several centuries, Azalin should have heard at least something about the Von Zaroviches.


I remember reading somewhere that there was a Birthright kingdom that was very similar to Barovia, leaving open the possibility (should you choose to take it) that Strahd came from Cerilia.

Strahd and Oerth are a very bad fit imho. Birthright perhaps. But i - like Rotipher - prefer an unknown prime world.

FTR, my other main setting after Ravenloft is Judges Guild's Wilderlands.
The only thing older than THAT would probably be the "Island of Balifor" or something like that...

I personally feel most convenient with either setting Barovia in Damara, like the EtCR book suggests, or in Karameikos on Mystara. In fact, a Mystara/RL crossover might be something I will try one day...

Seems like that site isn't suggesting that Barovia is from Oerth, simply giving suggestions for how to incorporate it there if running Expedition in a Greyhawk campaign, which we already know can be dropped anywhere, so why not Oerth? So kudos to them for thinking where it might best fit and not just dropping it anywhere with no explanation, but like the others, I agree that canon Barovia is and should be from an unnamed world.

Now, shoehorning Barovia into WoG is pretty hard, because they have no pseudo-slavic setting there...

I completly agree...especially considering Barovia/the von Zarovichs are the "key stone" domain and to link it to any TSR world cheapens the Ravenloft campaign world IMHO (if that makes sense).

Though I am a bit surprised that there isn't a "Eberron" domain yet (and the ramifications of all that magic technology pouring into the other domains...Steam Engines vs Lightning Rails? )

Personally, I'd place Barovia on it's own Prime Material Plane. Maybe it would fit in the Dimension of Myth/Laterre [ from 'classic 'D&D].
