Steel is a man-made alloy of iron and carbon. It has a lesser carbon content than that of pig iron and a greater carbon content than that of wrought iron. It is hard, elastic, and strong. It is an Iron Age invention. Steel weapons and shields begin to appear late in that period. The beginning of the production of steel in industrial quantities will await the blast furnance and the Renaissance period.
