The Boatman wrote:"Just fhor you, I'll make sure to really rip off anyone who asks about it."
"The sentiment is appreciated. Keep on your guard however. Those who come looking may wish to silence you in a more permanent fashion." Agale said with a nod.
Tomas wrote:"...would you believe it was an accident?"
"'Trap' is the proper term Mr. Eisenwald." Mr. Agale added. "We had hoped that either yourself or one of your subordinates could determine more accurately what is afflicting the captain, or if indeed this is in fact Cedolin at all."
Lia wrote:"Explanations should wait until after the Captain -- or possibly what remains of him -- has been secured," Lia says in a very precise tone of voice. "It would be unpleasant if he became violent again."
Mr. Agale gave the mage an incredulous look which seemed to say are you suicidal? then took a half step away from her, just in case physical space could be used to distance himself from the statement as well.

* * *

The Borcan clears his throat before continuing Darius's narrative. "What can be learned by studying this creature aside, we have discovered another lead." He reaches into his attache and proffers the backwards written diary entry for the Commissioner's perusal. "Although a long shot, you may wish to circulate a description of the lady described to be brought in for questioning. I will admit a certain degree of curiosity at seeing what lies at the address noted. Will our continued service as civic minded citizens be further required?"

Agale assists Tomas's diplomacy. (Do I need to roll even though he succeeds on a 1?)

Kerrian immediately found himself on the full end of the Marquis' attention, the milky eyes narrowing slightly as they regarded the humble looking shifter. The question didn't sound like a question, but at the same time was meant as one. Le Marquis kept his gaze locked on the young man, awaiting the answer, to see if Kerrian was quite as certain and Tomas sounded.
"It's a possibility. But that's the best I can offer. If this was just possession, then it would be a very good possibility." Kerrian said, trying to look less like a laborer who happened to moonlight as a spiritual authority figure for his people, and more like a spiritual authority figure. Having just escaped a sinking ship where he was attacked by spirits only know what didn't exactly make things any easier.

"But now I'm wondering if this is really the Captain, and if it might be his reflection instead, and the real Captain is trapped in some world on the other side of the mirror." It took Kerrian a moment to realize the full intensity of the crazy that statement carried with it.

"I'm used to dealing with the spirit world. It's different, alien to people who don't know about it, but it's still very much tied to this physical world. A spirit of a painting is the spirit of a painting, it just has all the emotion..all the feeling coloring it. " Kerrian said, trying not to use the words feel or sense, having the sneaking suspicion that the Marquis was a man who dealt in the cold light of fact, with little room for instinct and the abstract.

"It's possible that this mirror world is similar to the spirit world. If, and that's a BIG if, I can access it.. I don't know what I'd be facing there, the social protocols, the general hostility of the inhabitants." Kerrian thought back to the encounter on the ship, having a sneaking suspicion that he knew full well the hostility of the inhabitants.

"I want to believe that the Captain can be saved. I didn't know him well, but from what little I saw of him, he was a good man and devoted to finding the truth. If there is no way to save him, and he made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, so be it and I pray that he is with his ancestors. If he can be saved...I owe him at least making the attempt."

Kerrian wrote:"It's a possibility. But that's the best I can offer. If this was just possession, then it would be a very good possibility."
Darius wrote:"Is his present condition one with which you are familiar, monsieur le Marquis?"
Le Marquis listened to the reports and theories given to him, glancing down at the fragile piece of parchment, unhindered by the mirror writing. Kerrian did not manage to garner himself a response, though he did earn himself a respite from M. Gauvain's attention. Darius' recap of the evening was also taken in, although for just a few moments le Marquis flicked his eyes away from the Mulani. He was obviously still listening, and likely in more detail than most people could when focusing their full attention, but his mind was obviously elsewhere.

Eventually, he turned his thoughts back to Darius. "Your landlord would prove better to ask," he answered - or didn't, depending on how one took it. He narrowed his eyes and steepled his fingers on the desk. "Why was the Archeron's cargo of importance?" he asked.

It was, despite the cold and abrupt tone, the sort of question that would accept "unknown" as an answer, although it seemed to expect more from you than that.
Agale wrote:"Although a long shot, you may wish to circulate a description of the lady described to be brought in for questioning. I will admit a certain degree of curiosity at seeing what lies at the address noted. Will our continued service as civic minded citizens be further required?"
M. Gauvain's gaze lingered on Celeste for a long moment, perhaps because among this group of armed and dangerous people, she stuck out like a sore thumb. The nun, the drunken poet, the ghoulish conspiracy nut, everyone else seemed plausibly capable of taking care of themselves, if one was willing to be generous. Le Marquis had certainly taken note of the burns and scorch marks on her well-accessorized dress and shoes.

"Yes," he finally answered, pulling out paper and pen to start writing a writ. He gave you all a look of cool warning. "Your activities have already drawn notice," he cautioned.

Nerit looked none too pleased with the Marquis' blatant show of hedonism, and his cold skepticism was matched with a thus far unnoticed glare.

It was, despite the cold and abrupt tone, the sort of question that would accept "unknown" as an answer, although it seemed to expect more from you than that.
"Relevance. To the previously explained," the nun said superciliously. Her back was rigid despite the contemplative placement of her hands hidden within her sleeves.

She turned to her companions without waiting for an answer from the noble, her cloak flowing about her ankles. "And if you want to test the authenticity of the familiar figure we have captured, messieurs, I suggest watching the nature of its reflection in a regular mirror."

Tomas turns half a glance at the woman with a scar across her nose, being altogether less subtle than la Marquis, but doesn't make any audible response to the man's warning.

Could it have been...?

Its not his style, but ten years can change a man, Tomas reflects. Still, speculating won't help. "Right then." Tomas brushes some soot off of his shoulder, closing his eyes and thinking for a minute. "Is there anything keeping us from checking that place out tonight?" Besides sanity, naturally.

"Exhaustion," Lia replies in a flat tone of voice. She gives the Marquis a flat look that says nothing at all, and speaks no more.

The Commissioner wrote:"Why was the Archeron's cargo of importance?"
For a moment, Agale's expression tensed into a grimace as though he were watching a client's vulgar outburst on the courtroom floor. "What I am certain the good sister implies is that we must all redouble our precautions to prevent a recurrence of Cedolin's fate." His voice was smooth and cloying, lulling your ears into a sense of complacency. Trying to avert the subject, he answers the commissioner.

"Ahem. The vessel in question sailed out of a Darkonian berth, but was currently chartered to transport a myriad of antiquities from throughout the Core to the Hazlani Academy. Of particular note, we have ascertained that person referred to as 'Bertin' was engaged in a meticulous misappropriation scheme, replacing key pieces with forgeries and falsifying manifests." As he speaks, Agale pulls out a pad of paper and carefully scribes a list of the removed and replaced artifacts. then hands the list to the commissioner. "Unlike the pre-Leonic pieces, it might be feasible for this Bertin individual to liquidate these on illicit markets."

"Oh, thank you, M. Gauvain, thank you inestimably!" Celeste had been looking rather more at a loss than usual while Cedolin was in the room--as if the former Captain's presence reminded her of the severity of the overall situation, and her general inability to do very much about it. The Commissioner’s permission was clearly a significant relief as well as a cause for happiness: Celeste took the writ once it was finished with a broad smile and an air of renewed optimism.

The group of you had a brief moment to reflect on the fact that the least competent person in the room had again taken it upon herself to be your official representative.

“You may be assured, M. Commissioner, that the discretion of our efforts shall be more than redoubled from this night onward. Such a thing as a sunken cargo ship—notable as it may be, accompanied by such tragic events!—may hardly be duplicated in the space of a single investigation.”

"Many of the Kartakan artifacts had been altered in a way to suggest that they were the product of an Ezran culture," Darius notes. "The reason for such an alteration is not yet clear, although 'the restoration is not what it seems' might somehow relate to it."

He makes no move to intercept Celeste's taking of the writ, perhaps because an enthusiastic and pretty Dementlieuse noblewoman who knows everyone in this city makes a better public face for the group than a dour and frankly sinister-looking foreign priest. Celeste Viardot may not be much of an investigator, but she's a wonderful figurehead.

While you had been speaking, the gendarme at the door had politely, but firmly, relieved you of all the rescued items from the Archeron. The gendarmerie might have had a good deal of faith in you, but it did not seem willing to let you take the tapestries and paintings home.

Le Marquis, once again, handed the writ to Celeste without complaint. He reached out and took his umbrella, standing up with a single, fluid movement.

"An elemental has broken free of the University and gone berserk," he informed you, narrowing his eyes. It was the most he'd ever spoken to you at one time. "A deliberate distraction. But not one I can ignore." He walked out of the room, the umbrella-cane clicking against the ground, and his black cloak billowing behind him.

"I leave this matter in your hands."

"Commissioner," Lia calls before the Marquis can leave. "When you say our actions have drawn attention, whose attention do you mean specifically? And I hope you will consider that the trap set on the ship and this most recent elemental breakout are very conveniently timed. Someone has been making all effort to cast Dementlieu into chaos; if they can do so by having two of the main power blocs of this city launch into civil war, it would probably please them to no end."

"Lia, he knows." Tomas puts a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Let the man do his job, ja? Besides..."

'The restoration is not what it seems.'

"Cerise." Tomas says with a haunted look in his eye, as though he had just solved for "x" on a polynomial of the damned. "Could you tell me that story about the burnt wing of the asylum again, please? In detail?"

"We'd need the patient's name, if you're thinking what I'm thinking, Tomas." Kerrian said, trying to assemble the pieces of this in his mind. "I'm wondering..why does this mystery woman have lesions, and cover her hands? Something she works with, some disease..or weird mirror worlds doing awful things to you?"

Lia might well have saved her breath. M. Gauvain did not respond. Perhaps he, like Darius, felt anything more he had to say would be obvious. Either way, he was gone. The guard at the door escorted you out a few minutes later, once she was content that you didn't have any priceless artifacts hidden in your shoes. The snow was falling gently from a dark grey sky, but off in the distance, near the University, you could see black storm clouds roiling.

"Umm, I'm not sure what else there is to say," Cerise admitted, with a shrug. "The records are really bad... half the time we're lucky if there's even a patient name on them, some of them were people they picked up off the streets, or 'family embarrassments' that got stuffed there to be forgotten. They only knew about the patient's fear of reflections and the metal serving tray from what they pieced together after the fact. Most of it was talking about what happened to the patients trapped in that wing when it went bad."

"I'll go back and look through the records again when I have a spare moment," she volunteered.
Kerrian wrote:"I'm wondering..why does this mystery woman have lesions, and cover her hands? Something she works with, some disease..or weird mirror worlds doing awful things to you?"
"It could be," Cerise said. "I mean, if you're lucky that mirror stuff just goes away, but sometimes? It gets into things. And once it's there, it spreads. Lesions sounds a little too, um, normal, though."

Richard, on the other hand, seemed interested in a different part of Kerrian's theory. "Something she, she works with?"

"There, there's an old story I was told by one of the Anchorites in, in Grimshaw," he told Kerrian. "About a, a brother and, and sister who visited the Icon of Ezra. The sister was, was lame, her legs withered, and, and prayed with all her heart to be healed, so that she, she wouldn't be a burden on her brother any longer. The, the brother also prayed, because he was sick of taking care of her, and wanted to, to be free to do whatever he wanted. The next day, the sister's legs were, were healed, but her brother's legs withered away, leaving him at the mercy of his sibling."

"I'd, I'd heard rumors the icon had, had been more active, of late," he finished, his grey eyes unreadable.

"That was really disappointing!" Cerise pouted as you walked along the snow-crusted street, her red boots kicking up tuffs of white powder.

"It, it was? I was, was surprised he took Captain Cedolin in with so, so little persuasion," Richard replied, raising his eyebrows slightly. "And, and he is putting a great deal of trust in, in us. I, I imagine if he had any help to, to spare he wouldn't be letting us continue with this investigation." There was, perhaps, a slight frown on Richard's mouth, that said he had a few other theories why M. Gauvain might be sending you to investigate rather than the gendarme, but he didn't say any of them aloud.

"Yes, but he was eating!" Cerise protested. "Vampires don't eat! This ruins everything!" She paused for a moment, thinking, before suddenly brightening back up again. "Unleeeeeess he's a vegetarian vampire? I once read this one thing about this mysterious rabbit-"

The tension of the events before proved too much. Richard burst out laughing.

Rue Foyle was in the Quartier Savant, near the very southern wall of Port-a-Lucine. People sometimes forgot that Port-a-Lucine was a walled city, but it was. The walls were short and old, and in many cases people had built right up to the edge, and spread out around the gates. They'd have held for a few hours at most against the tools of modern siege-craft, against cannons and mortars, but they were still around.

Rue Foyle itself was a street of tall, expensive-looking townhouses, that opened right up into one of Port-a-Lucine's public parks. It was one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city, with snow-bound trees and mossy hills covered in frost, and nearby a great greenhouse, panels of glass covered in crystals of ice.

Number 47 was just a little inside, a stately townhouse four stories tall, nestled next to others. It was a residence, same as nearly every place on the street, with the exception of the post office across the street and a merchant's office on the corner. It looked genteel, fashionable, and expensive.

It was also locked. Of course, you had a warrant, but even then this might have proved a problem had you not noticed that someone had left one of the windows un-latched.

"I, I guess I meant to ask this earlier, but there just, it didn't seem to be a good time," Richard mentioned, rubbing his beard awkwardly. "But are, are we alright for this?" There were more specific concerns hidden in the question, but he didn't seem to want to mention one of you being a single breath away from death, or another becoming suddenly electrified after being hit with a blast that should have killed a normal man. "What happened before on the, the Archeron was, was, a close thing."

"Have faith, Richard," Nerit raised her eyebrows as she said this, expectant.

In her usual chameleon shift of mood, she added, "Beside, there are a dozen of us. Defendit numerus." She smiled.
