Re: The Shattered City: Chapter Four
Kerrian reeled, looking near death's door for a moment till Tomas' carefully chosen word of healing caused him to buck up. There was a moment...a moment of green eyes flashing amber in the light, but only a moment quickly passed. What didn't quickly pass was Kerrian's assault on Old Tom.
A wind, or perhaps it was the wingbeats of some great raptor filled the air, a radiant manifestation of a hawk swooping down, impacting on the undead engineer. Though his nature ablated most of the attack, what it did not negate was the wind from the raptor's wings surrounding him, granting speed to Kerrian's allies. Kerrian didn't halt the assault though, re-calling his Spirit companion to his side, the spiritual wolf assaulting the being that dare approach so close to its master.
OOC:Spirit of the Hawk's Wind on Tom Fields. Miss reflex with a 17, so do a total of 6 radiant after the miss=half damage. Also, a Burst 3 Zone manifests around tom. While in that zone, allies may use a move action to shift 4 and ignore difficult terrain while utilizing that shift.
Minor action to dismiss and recall my spirit companion, putting it at AG8, and using Defending Strike vs Tom with an action point.
Misses with a 15, but all allies adjacent to spirit companion still get a +1 to all non AC defenses, so right now that is Tomas and Nic.
Minor Action (downgraded move) to Healing Spirit Self, for Surge. Nic will recover 5, due to spirit companion overflow. Oh, and thanks to Tomas, I recover surge +6

Re: The Shattered City: Chapter Four
'Not now!' Lia thinks when an unpleasant sensation blossoms in the pit of her stomach. 'I don't have time for this yet!' She focuses her will and pushes the feeling back into a tiny seed.
"Perfringe!" Lia shouts out loud, waving her staff over her head. The hand of ice obeys, squeezing the last of the boilermen for all it's worth. The hand's lady master does not settle for letting it do all the work, however. Runes of blue fire almost write themselves as the Mage twirls her wand like a baton. "Globum vis colligo. Globus vis ad inimicum meum volat. Globu vis, inimicum meum perfringe!"
Again the letters swirl into the crystal on the staff's end. A spherical blast of force shoots out of the stone, impacting with the same boilerman being crushed by the icy fist.
Again, the dreadful sensation wells up in Lia's guts. 'I didn't make the bar strong enough,' Lia curses in her thoughts while she falls back from Tom Fields' scalding steam. 'But I have to hang on. I have to!' Even while she seems to retreat, the Wizard scans the battlefield and looks for an opportunity.
(OOC: Minor action: Lia sustains Bigby's Icy Grasp on Boilerman 3, deals 12 cold damage.
Standard action: Lia casts Orb of Force at Boilerman 3.
Attack roll: 22. Hit!
Damage roll: 23.
Lia gains 5 hp from hitting Mr. B3, thanks to Nicholas.
Move action: Lia falls back to AL8.)

Re: The Shattered City: Chapter Four
Lia's queasy feeling got a good bit stronger, as the orb of force hit the boilerman once, did a brief loop-around in the air on the follow-through, and proceeded to slam the automaton on the head as if it was an errant nail in an ill-conceived picture-hanging.
Wait...oh, yes, it was doing it again. Repeatedly. This was potentially insulting to mechanical engineers, it was.
"I say, Prof. Mourneswaithe, your arcane talents are most effective this evening! Though one must be rather disheartened by such a tumultuous effect, necessary though it may be..." Celeste sidled around to get a better look.
Lia's attack succeeds again, with a 31 vs. Fort against the last boilerman, and 12 untyped damage done. It is also immobilized until the end of its next turn, because it has been pounded into the floor. That was totally not a Spectral Claw! That would be preposterous. Celeste moves to AI9.

Re: The Shattered City: Chapter Four
Impressive. Agale could not deny Mr. Fields' show of force. Fully aware of his own frailties when it came to direct martial confrontations, he decided to leave the situation in Mr. Eisenwald's capable gauntlets. Still, no reason not to provide whatever meager distraction he could. "I say, do be careful with that steam, I can't imagine dampening the coals will do anything good for their efficiacy!"
Clambering back on the elevated edge of the coal car, he crouched down adopting the stance of a runner at the blocks.
Standard: Dishearten Centered on AE8
31 vs Will hits Tom for 13 psychic damage and he takes a -2 to attack rolls until the end of Agale's next turn.
You can roll for me if any invisible cats are caught in the burst as well.
Move: Going to AH13

1 Days, 0 Hours, 38 Minutes
Aboard the No. 5 Lamplighter, Late at night on April 23rd, 770
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Player Actions
Agale deals 13 Psychic damage to Old Tom and a -2 to all attacks.
Tomas swaps places with Mercator, effectively healing Mercator for 26 and taking 23 damage himself. Heals Nicolas for 20 and Kerrian for 22. Misses Old Tom.
Nicolas Unlucks the 23 damage Tomas took away, also Inspires Competence (Acrobatics) and anyone hitting B3 heals 5 HP
Rex
Lia hits B3 for 12+5 with Icy Grasp and for 23 with the Orb of Force for a total of 40 damage, and heals to full thanks to Nico's shout.
Kerrian whiffs Old Tom but deals 6 damage anyway, but grants Tomas and Nicolas +1 to all non-AC defenses via spirit, and makes an easy-shift zone. Also heals self for 16 and Nicolas for 5.
Mercator teleports back and hits Old Tom for 18 Psychic and a -3 to Will. Then hits B1 for 29 damage.
Nerit finishes off B1 and heals Mercator for a further 22 HP.
Celeste hits B3 for a further 12 damage and Immobilizes him.
Recharge: Old Tom does not recharge Last Whistle, B3 does not recharge Fortitude of the Machine
"There it is!"
Finnsen was distracted, and thus saw little of the battle raging behind him: he was distracted by the silver beads, he was distracted by actually driving the train, piloting the spectral machine beyond mortal ken. Now he was distracted by the sight in front of him. From the coal car you should just see it - a flickering wisp, galloping through the woods, as haunting and spectral as the train you rode on. It was a horse, quite literally, ghostly hooves pounding the forest soil without leaving a mark. Though you were travelling at speeds unfathomable, beyond the impossible, it easily kept apace. In an instant, it flickered out of this world, blinking into the realms beyond - a cold, bone-chilling instant later, and the ghost train followed, the speeding landscape turning into a twisted shadow of reality.
Finnsen seemed unconcerned with this, casually pulling his coils of rope from his shoulder and tying it with a solid sailor's knot. He looked out the train window and began to experimentally twirl the rope. Something stopped the boatman dead in his tracks, though, as he furrowed his brow and lightly touched the controls. Though you couldn't feel anything different, Finnsen clearly could. He thrust his head out the window, alarmed, and looked up at the top of the locomotive.
"It's that scum-sucking cat!" Finnsen roared - furious for the first time you'd seen, and proving to have a formidable temper. "He's clogging up the steam vents! He's trying to blow the boiler!"
Finnsen is at the controls, and you have found the Breath! Hurray!
New Victory and Lose conditions:
Part 2: Catch the Breath
--Lasso the Breath! This is a single DC 30 Athletics action that can be attempted by anyone who has rope (Finnsen brought rope, and will be making the Athletics checks unless someone asks for it from him). Aiding another (AKA, holding onto the rope so that the primary check-roller doesn't get pulled off the train) is heartily encouraged.
Lose Conditions
--You no longer lose if Finnsen dies.
--However, if you're still trying to catch the Breath when the Boiler explodes in three rounds, you lose (no boiler means no moving train, meaning the Breath runs away. Also, you probably are maimed and/or killed from the explosion).
Remy celebrates by moving up and tossing a Seeking Wind at B3. He rolls a natural 20, so that's 17+5 thunder and cold damage, leaving B3 with three hitpoints. Then a minor action to go invisible once again.
And that heat was now turned on Tomas. From grills and vents in the Engineer's body came a veritable cloud of boiling steam, hot enough to scald the flesh, turning it an angry red. It hurt, not the sharp slicing pains that had come from other foes, but a full, brute assault of pain on Tomas's senses. The Lamordian was half-blinded by the steam, and it was then that Tom Field's blow struck. If the jets of steam had been painful and burning, especially combined with the increasingly warm coals, then the physical touch of the Engineer was the battering of a locomotive.
With one blow of seemingly-infinite force, Tom Fields knocked his Lamordian foe straight off the train, and possibly out of his senses as well. That done, the Engineer advanced on the rest of the people who had dared violate the sanctity of his time-table, and tried to hijack his train.
B3 uses Burning Coals vs Reflex on Tomas, Mercator and Celeste. Hits Tomas (4+5-3=6 fire damage), hits Mercator (4+5=9 fire damage) and hits Celeste (4+5-5=4 fire damage). Apparently B3 goes out in a blaze of glory.
Old Tom's Eternal Engine aura directs a Steam-Jet attack vs AC at Nicolas, Tomas, and Kerrian. Misses Tomas and Nicolas, but hits Kerrian for 14+5 damage (15 of which is fire). Old Tom takes 7 radiant damage from Tomas's Challenge.
Old Tom then proceeds to throw a Scalding Steam attack at Tomas, so three more Steam Jet attacks vs AC. Misses the first attack, then hits twice for 15+5-3=18 and 16+5-3=19 damage, respectively.
Tom then uses a Minor action to use No Ticket! vs AC on the now-bloodied Tomas. This hits, and the Lamordian is pushed three squares to AJ6 and is Stunned (save ends) Aftereffect Tomas is Slowed (save ends). Also, since Tom threw the other Tom off the train, Tomas makes an immediate save. If he succeeds, Tomas falls prone in AI7. If he fails, Tomas takes 15 damage and miraculously avoids getting killed by hanging on and pulling himself up in square AK7.
Saves: B3 makes his save versus Immobilization, though he's still immobilized from Celeste's Spectral Claw.
Victory Conditions:
Part 1: Find the Breath
--Successful!
Part 2: Catch the Breath
--Lasso the Breath! This is a single DC 30 Athletics action that can be attempted by anyone who has rope and is within 10 squares of the Breath (Finnsen brought rope, and will be making the Athletics checks unless someone asks for it from him). Aiding another (AKA, holding onto the rope so that the primary check-roller doesn't get pulled off the train) is heartily encouraged.
--Shoveling coal into the engine moves the Breath down 1 square on the map.
Part 3: Get off the No. 5 alive
–????
Lose Conditions:
--Die. (This is obvious)
--The Boiler blows up before you catch the Breath (3 round time-limit) (no boiler means no moving train, meaning the Breath runs away. Also, you probably are maimed and/or killed from the explosion).
--Let Old Tom die. (Bad things happen to a Domain when a Darklord gets killed. Best case scenario, you find yourself in an utterly unmagical train coming to a slow halt while the Breath runs off. Worst case scenario... I hear Necropolis is lovely this time of year.

Miscellaneous Mechanics
Deep Shroud The space Nerit occupies and each square around her are Heavily Obscured.
Coal: The coal (columns 7-12, rows AF-down) is difficult terrain. Also, any fire attacks directed at a target standing on the coal deal +5 fire damage.
The Engine Cabin: The train cabin (columns 7-12, rows V-AB) is enclosed from the top and sides. Those are walls. It is open from the bottom, and you may enter freely through that area, and shoot freely from the coal-car to the engine cabin, or vice versa.
Crossing the Gap: You may either jump directly across the gap (rows AD-AE) which is an Athletics DC 30, or DC 15 with at least 2 squares of a running start, bear in mind that the terrain is difficult and so you need a speed of 7 in order to make it, or you may shimmy across the connector (Column 10), which is an Acrobatics DC 20 check.
Falling off the Train: If you fall off the train, either by failing the above Athletics or Acrobatics checks, or by being pushed, pulled, or slid, you take damage and are slammed into the top row of the coal car (row AF) by the speed of the train.

The Engineer turned his gaze upon the Lamordian and obliged. Glass lenses shone from where there would be eyes, and there was nothing alive in there. Just the precise efficiency of the machine and the passionless but unstoppable force of the engine. Jets of steam vented off in random directions, one of them scalding Kerrian almost in passing. The heat inside of Tom Fields must have been immense.Tomas wrote:"And you, Tom." Tomas steps forward, blood and ichor dripping down his face as a few of the steam burns rupture. Tomas swipes Ivorsen at the engineer with a crack of holy light! "Your fight is with ME!"

Mercator ducks away from the mechanical engineer and shifts with the ease and fluidity of a ball of mercury to the steam-man's other side. Gesturing almost idly, he raises his rod in an imperious gesture; behind him a final ray of light pierces the last of the boiler-men, splitting its faceplate to reveal the inner workings of its head.
"FEAR US," he commands, in his weirdly musical voice, and flourishes the rod. As he speaks he disappears in a shock of grey-purple light; a roil of energies burst from the place he occupied and rock Old Tom, sending him to his knees. A moment later he appears at the rear of the engine, where he turns to examine the scene with an air of quiet satisfaction.
Move: Use the magical zone of shifting to get to AG9.
Minor: Sustain Crown of Stars and attack B3, 26+2 (Improved Fate of the Void) vs. Reflex for 7 damage, which I believe puts paid to his account.
Standard-->Move: Otherwind Stride. Attack vs. Old Tom. Critical, 32 vs. Reflex. I shudder to think of the karmic debt I am incurring in this combat. Damage is 15+6+11=32 untyped damage, and Old Tom is immobilized until the end of my next turn. Teleport to AB10.
Since Mercator has moved more than three square, he gets concealment (-2 to attacks against him) until the end of his next turn.

Re: The Shattered City: Chapter Four
"Sagitta magica, omne errore vacua, vole!" Lia shouts, throwing wide her arms. Arcane force gathers in front of her into the shape of a dart, and zips away like an arrow. Hissing like a crossbow bolt in flight, it shoots through the melée without fail, and buries itself in the black cat's body. There is an almighty detonation as the magic dart erupts in a blast of silvery fire.
(OOC: Standard action: Lia casts Magic Missile for a guaranteed hit. The spell deals 7 damage to the bad kitty.)
"Ad inimicum meum perfringere, vole!" Lia shouts, waving her staff as if to signal a derigible where to land. The crystal atop her staff glows bright red. The giant hand of ice responds. Relinquishing its hold on the broken Boilerman, it flies past Finnsen, out towards the boiler. Its fingers spread wide as it snatches at the tiny menace.
(OOC: Minor action: Lia sustains Bigby's Icy Grasp.
Move action: Lia sends Bigby's Icy Grasp up towards S7, which puts it adjacent to the black cat. Unless I misread the spell description, the hand automatically attacks once adjacent to a target. If this is correct:
Attack roll of 25 - 5 vs. Reflex = 20.
If that hits:
Damage roll of 22 cold.
Of course, if I've misread things, I'm just blowing smoke... But I do move the Icy Grasp up into grabbing range for the next round.)
With the hand on its way, Lia shouts into the cloud of steam and carnage: "Fields! Tom Fields! Engineer! We would only use your train -- that blasted cat will destroy it if it succeeds! How will you ever move this thing again if the boiler is detonated?!"

Re: The Shattered City: Chapter Four
Nicolas considered his options for a moment, he could stay here and help cow down the hulking engineer, but the poet was rapidly running out of tricks he though might even work against the metal monstrosity. BUT he could help keep that bloody cat out of things and try and grab the breath.
Mind made up he dashes forward across the coals, pulling a silver flask which he thrusts into Kerrian's hands as he passes. "Take this and keep them alive, I'm going to aid Finnsen" he shouts by way if explanation for the impromptu gift. Then steeling himself he steps out onto the connecting bar between the two cars, suddenly aware of how precarious and stupid this idea was. An idea that causes a momentary bout of vertigo and results in the poet losing his footing and slamming heavily back against the coal car.
Immediate Interrupt: Chord of Resilience on Tomas negating 10 hp damage
Free Action: Virtue of Valor granting Nerit +3 temporary hitpoints for downing B1
Move Action: Nicolas shifts 4 squares to Ad10
Minor Action: Retrieve a potion of healing
Free Action: Hand said potion to Kerrian as he passes
Acrobatics to cross the gap: 13 + 2 = 15 fantastic - Nicolas falls off the train
I was planning to use my standard action as a second move, but as he falls off can he use it as a second wind instead? If so:
Standard Action second wind for 16hp back

Re: The Shattered City: Chapter Four
"Quite so, Mr. Fields!" Celeste had quite obviously not thought of this before. "I venture to say that we are rather on the same side of this issue, sir!"Prof. wrote:"Fields! Tom Fields! Engineer! We would only use your train -- that blasted cat will destroy it if it succeeds! How will you ever move this thing again if the boiler is detonated?!"
Also, Celeste was somehow on the other end of the coal car, because she was apparently very good at ducking. Because she was fine, still. Not on fire. Still definitely not on fire.
Celeste shifts back from Tom and moves to AI13. She then Second Winds.

Re: The Shattered City: Chapter Four
Perhaps I overestimated Eisenwald. No matter, there are always contingencies. "Mr Fields! That is quite enough. Do control yourself! This is hardly behaviour befitting a man of your position of responsibility." Though come to think of it, calling him a 'man' was hardly accurate now.
"Hang in there Mr. Mauganson, with a little more precision and endurance, we should have what we came for and be able to make an emergence disembarkation within the next 30 seconds."
With his coat fluttering in the wind and arms held out and back in a v shape for balance, Agale sprung forward, racing along the rim of the coal car and careening over the gap. He lands hard on the other side, teetering for a moment before regaining his balance.
Standard: Augment 2 Dishearten centered on AG9 (last of my PP)
I miss the engineer by a single point.
Reroll token to the rescue. He is hit for 12 psychic damage and takes a -5 penalty to attack rolls until the end of Agale's next turn.
Minor: Majestic Word on Kerrian who can spend a surge, heal an extra +10 and is slid to AG12, out of the aura.
Move: Running along the side of the coal car and leaping across the gap. AG13->AF12->AB12, Athletics 22 to clear it

Re: The Shattered City: Chapter Four
1 Days, 0 Hours, 37 Minutes
Aboard the No. 5 Lamplighter, Late at night on April 23rd, 770
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Player Actions
Mercator finishes off B3 with 7 damage, and hits Old Tom for 32 and immobilization.
Agale hits Old Tom with a Dishearten for 12 Psychic and -5 to attacks, heals Kerrian for 24, and then runs off.
Tomas gets thrown off the train and takes 15 damage, but makes his save versus Stun.
Nicolas negates 10 damage for Tomas, attempts to get onto the Car. Fails, taking 19 damage in the process, then Second Winds for 16.
Lia hits the Cat for 7 damage, moves the hand over (the Hand does not auto-attack).
Kerrian heals Nicolas for 16 and Tomas for 10,
Nerit aids Finnsen with the Athletics.
Celeste runs off and Second Winds for 15 HP.
Recharge: Old Tom does recharges Last Whistle. He does not recharge No Ticket! however.
There was another glowing, airy word from Professor Lessard, his blue coat flapping from the speed of the train. It was a word none of you understood, yet it spoke to all of you. No matter where you hailed from, what language you called your native, it spoke to all of you. It said "Wind." And as he spoke it, the winds that were streaming past you whipped around, slamming into Tom Fields. Such was the force of them that they knocked the engineer, a solid mass of iron and steel, straight off his feet.
Finnsen grinned at the shrouded nun, giving the rope an experimental twirl. He leaned from the window, tying to get his lasso twirling well enough to throw. But the same winds Remy had called to his command were hindering you now. The boatman had to scrabble to keep the rope from being ripped from his hands, and it fell short of his quarry. Finnsen began to quickly haul it back in, looking a bit embarrassed, actually; Tomas could hear him cursing in Grabanese, and though the dialect differed a fair bit from the dwarvish speech of Lamordia, the colorful sailors' oaths didn't require much translation.
Remy hits Old Tom with a Seeking Wind vs. Will. Deals 14+5 cold and thunder damage, and Old Tom is knocked Prone.
Finnsen rolls a 9, +15 Athletics and +2 Aid Another = 26 vs. DC 30
Old Tom's Eternal Engine aura directs a Steam Jet attack at Nicolas, which misses completely. He then proceeds to use his newly-recharged Last Whistle vs. Will to attack Nicolas, Kerrian, and Celeste. Misses Nicolas and Celeste, but hits Kerrian on the nose precisely, dealing 20 Necrotic and Thunder damage to Kerrian, and Kerrian is Dazed (Save Ends).

Re: The Shattered City: Chapter Four
Lia tries to focus on the giant hand of ice, but is momentarily distracted by the sight of the Last Breath; the hand's clumsy fingers fail to winkle the cat out of its spot in the steam vents. The Mage utters a string of sulphurous curses which, one may hope, were not learned at the University.
The bad words have barely faded from hearing when Lia is already squatting at Tomas' side, and she has a metal ampule at his lips. "Drink and heal, my White Knight," Lia says as she tries to get the deliciously fragrant liquid down his throat. "The battle is not yet over for any of us."
(OOC: Standard action: Attacking the cat with Bigby's Icy Grasp. Attack roll 12 = 5 = 7, which is just not gonna fly. Darnit. =_=
Minor action - if allowed! - administering a healing potion to Tomas, allowing him a free healing surge. I hope that if it's a minor action for doing it to yourself, it can be a minor action when doing it for another.
No move action this turn.)
