Shadows of Esteren
Shadows of Esteren
Surprised that I didn't find anything about this book on this forum. Just got my Shadows of Esteren book in the mail and it is very much a pretty book. Haven't gotten to far in the ruleset yet, but the setting has been described to me as a cross between Ravenloft and Call of Cthulhu. Anyone else get the game?
Re: Shadows of Esteren
I was just looking at this game online - mostly the core book video from Kickstarter. It looks fantastic! What are the rules like?

I saw it at GenCon. Looked amazing. Beautiful book. But was out of my budget.

Re: Shadows of Esteren
Finally got my hands on it! Yay!
It has elements of Gothic and Lovecraftian horror set in a world influenced by Celtic culture. The d10 system takes a while to digest, but the Ogham/Miracles spellcasting techniques are very intuitively simple (which is a good thing).

I don't know whether to hate you all for this or love you all for this. I got the free PDF and OMG this game looks and feels awesome. Now I of course will be looking to run this soon. Wow this is a good idea...

Re: Shadows of Esteren
There's a second Kickstarter going now for those of us who missed the first.
While I'm tight for cash, I regretted not getting the book at GenCon so I'm considering grabbing it now.

I am getting the books via the second kickstarter, and I am loving this game.
Re: Shadows of Esteren
I too jumped in on the second kickstarter. I'm very excited to really sink my teeth into the setting.

Snatched all three books with the second Kickstarter. Looks good, and is legit.
Now, also got myself Numenera, and so the call for my next game is pretty open. However, if Esteren comes with a neat adventure, it could be a good choice.
The overall problem I see with setting sets, though, is that they are very neatly done, and show you a nice frame, but adventures, if included at all,
are sketchy at best, and in the end, you run generic stuff in a frame that you could have in another setting at least as effectively.

The now ENnie award winning Shadows of Esteren. Gold for Best Art and for Production Values. Silver for Product of the Year.
Book 0 has three adventures and there are other separate adventures. So even if most suck there should be something usable you can pull from the adventures.
Also grabbed my copy of the first three books. Looking forward to checking out the PDFs in the next couple weeks.

Checked it out via the PDFs. Beautiful stuff, but Ravenloft still better.
In essence, the mood plays on a variation of Warhammer FRP, with a Celtic background, instead of a proto-Germanic one.
The ruleset, sort of TOR done right, from what I saw. Still, overall, not a game aimed specifically at adults, and if you own much RL stuff already, probably a pass.
As RL surrogate, anything Dark Souls (the videogame) might well serve better, and as a stand-alone, more ambivalent systems,
like the old Dragon Warriors, might also be a better choice.
