"As-as you wish, my lady." Richard took the fox and turned down the hallways towards Marcel's room, thankful for the foresight his companion had shown in making sure Richard knew where it was. No doubt the anchorite would be grumpy to be awoken so late, but this was precisely the situation that he'd made plans to be woken for.

Søren enters, tapping a red-and-gold baton against the heel of one hand, and stands in the doorway scanning the room. His gaze passes over Lena and Cattia twice before he shrugs and makes his way forward, smiling and greeting various guests. After about ten minutes he's next to you, smiling and looking very much the relaxed and gracious host.

"How are you enjoying the festivities, Baroness, cousin?" he says, smiling.

"I said to them that I would wait in Goodman Varreg’s quarters if they had need of me, and it would not do to be absent without letting them know.”
"Oh. Oh, that makes sense. But, um, maybe you don't have to tell them about this? About me, and Ras--uh, Goodman Varreg. I wasn't supposed to tell anyone else, it was just that I was really worried and I couldn't find him."

"They're certainly more interesting than what I'd originally planned for this evening." Lena said with an impish smile. "More exciting as well, particularly the fireworks. And you, Freiherr?"

"Oh, a host's duties are never done," Søren replies. "Of course, we do get certain compensations, beginning with the company of one's guests! I thought perhaps you might be interested in the view from the Hound's Tower, Baroness--one can see well into Barovia, and I'm told you can see them lighting the midnight bonfire in Immol tonight. Would you care to accompany me to see if it's true?"

ImageImage and also Marcel

Marcel, a light sleeper accustomed to having to move on short notice, is ready to visit Helja well before Richard is, the paladin having decided to don at least his breastplate before testing what the night's adventures may bring. It is perhaps twenty minutes before they find themselves at the door to Helja's private apartments, rather below their own, confronted by a pair of very determined-looking Rashemani women.

"What do you want?" the shorter and older asks, looking suspiciously and somewhat short-sightedly at Marcel and Richard's Ezran garb. "The Landsyf needs her sleep."

"Well we mustn't deny our host his compensations. I would love to." Lena said, casting her eyes downward and letting her smile turn coquettish. "If you'll please excuse me, Cattia?" By which I mean follow me very subtly, Cattia?

"Indeed, it would never do," Søren says, stowing the baton in his sleeve. "It's not too far, and the view is very fine even at night, since you can see so much of the sky. Perhaps you'd care to come, too, cousin Cattia?"

He continues with a brief history of the Helholt as you make your way up the Tower--despite being perfectly polite, he somehow manages to set a pace that hints that he's in a bit of a hurry. At the top of the tower you find two sentries, whom he sends down the stairs with a word.

"So, Baroness von Zarovich. Cousin. It is borne in upon me that there is more to your visit here, and more to your spending the day together, than mere amusement. In point of fact, the Baroness is here as a representative of her illustrious cousin, the Count Strahd, and not as a representative of the foundry. So. Her itinerary takes her to Jarenberg and Isfahani territories--notoriously remote and restive. Her station and her errand ensure she will meet with Isam Jarenberg and Nezar Isfahani--as the representative of our northern neighbor. It seems perhaps the vraylock is right to fear the intrigues of Barovian agents."

He pauses, to see how this is being received, then continues. "Barovian troops...should they ever come...must pass by this road. And they will not pass the Helholt unless its master wills it. You want a friend here, and I would be happy to be that friend."

"Oh Søren. Please, call me Lena. Anyone accusing me of espionage can call me Lena." The Barovian said with a mischievous smile. She seemed neither shocked nor surprised by Søren's words, though she did pause some when Cattia was invited. That had been unexpected. She stepped up to the parapet, looking out across the countryside. Somewhere out there was Barovia. "Søren, I would love to have you as a friend, but there's the question of Yarek Thott. Or is that a question you've an answer to?"

"I hope it is a question you have an answer to, Lena. My cousin has chosen certain...companions...and habits which will destroy him, and perhaps more than him. I have excellent reason to believe that he has united himself to the cult known as the Slaves of Iblis; that the Inquisition suspects him; and that he has invited his companions in heresy to celebrate their rites here, tonight. If the Inquisition finds him, he and anyone found with him will go to the Tables, and our house will be utterly reliant on the mercy of the Paave and the Autark for its future."

Søren pauses again.

"I cannot persuade him, for obvious reasons. I hope you can. Moreover, you can perhaps offer him asylum, as neither Nova Vaasa nor Phiraz would ever do if his actions were known."

"I think you have a very high opinion of my persuasiveness, Søren. Possibly higher than I deserve." Lena said, the teasing tone gone from her words. She felt his concern, and understood it to some extent. And perhaps Lena respected him for it, though the cynical, paranoid corner of her mind thought it wouldn't be nearly as easy as he made it sound. "But... I agree. Everything within my power to persuade him, I shall do." And hope my Esteemed Cousin doesn't mind this fait accompli. Lena pursed her lips. "Are the Ladies Cymra or Helja involved in any of this?" She asked absently. "Do you know how they will react?"

"Your-your pardon, good ladies, I-I-I would not think to wake her if it was not of-of great importance," Richard said quietly, feeling greatly conspicuous to be back in his armor - and feeling he would regret it a great deal if he hadn't put it on when he did. "I-I-I had heard that her health had not been good, of late, and I-I-I know her rest is very needed. But I-I-I had been told something I-I think she would need to know. I-I will not disturb her for-for long."

Diplomacy, at +11, to try and assuage the situation

"I certainly hope you are able. His mother knows he has fallen into vice, but I cannot believe she has any knowledge of his involvement with the cult. She's an Abtor of the Abtors; she'd hand him over to the Inquisition herself. His wife..." Søren shrugs. "I couldn't say. She's a deep one, and may know more than she lets on, but she wouldn't share that kind of worry with me. She may be the key, really; I don't understand their relationship fully, but I think Yarek respects her when he doesn't resent her."

"Please," Marcel says simply. "Her family needs her help."

The two glance at each other, and then the younger turns to go in. The elder, still unconvinced, glowers at you as you wait--not for long. Helja appears, dressed in a loose white garment and a shawl thrown about her neck for warmth, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. She makes a sort of cluck with her tongue, then addresses you, her eyes uncannily not quite meeting yours. "Yes? What is it, freiherr, dommer?"

"I-I-I am sorry to wake you, Landsyf," Richard said, genuinely. "Might-might I offer you my arm?"

Assuming she takes it, Richard subtly uses his Lay on Hands; it heals the Fatigued condition, and also 2d6 hp if that somehow matters.

"My-my... friend, the Baroness Elena von-von Zarovich, did tell me she heard a-a report - that an Inquisitor of the Lawgiver had infiltrated house Thott, and was-was likely here tonight," Richard continued, quietly. "She-she did not know if you knew, but did think that-that you should know, if you did not, and would-would wish to know. I-I apologize if you-you knew this already. She herself is-is seeking to find out more."
