ewancummins wrote:FRANZ, LATER THAT MORNING, AT A TENEMENT HOUSE

Franz reaches the tenement house, following the frau’s directions. The big rectangular building of dark, massive support timbers and peeling plaster walls stands three stories high, taller than anything else in a radius of a few blocks. The street angles down to the right, so that the building appears sunken on the left side, but in fact rises straight up. The front gate stands open to the elements, the big door that once stood in the entry corridor rotted off its hinges and laying on the stoop in fragments. Looking up, Franz sees broken tiles littering the sagging, high gabled roof. A tile slides down and smashes into the cobles, shattering. The rain gutters drip steady streams of dirty water onto the streets, feeding flooded drainage ditches cut on the near side of the path that runs downhill in front of the building. A stack of nailed together boards laid over a three foot stretch of the open sewer allow him a safe crossing up to the entryway.
Crossing into the building, Franz finds a long, shadowy hallway that runs into a barren, icy little courtyard about thirty feet from the entrance, dotted with blackened heaps of dead plants. On either side, doors face Franz, sunk into the walls of the long hall. Some hang open; others a closed. Several doorways have no door panels left standing, only rusty hinges—ragged curtains block those.
Peering across the fallow garden square at the far end of the main access hall, Franz sees the bottom of a staircase opening in an archway on the far side, flanked by two smaller doors in the far wall—both closed.

Munchen catches up with Franz and begins sniffing at doors.
A curtain rustles on Franz’s left side. The cloth rustles again. Munchen growls.
The curtain pulls aside and a grossly fat man in long underwear stares out at Franz,. A rusty butcher knife dangles in his right hand, low at his side. The man grunts and scratches his hairy jowls with his left hand. He looks down at Munchen.
“Does your dog bite?”

Franz looks at the man, face friendly.

"Mein dog does not bite unless the person is deserving, sir. I am looking for Mathilde unt her father. I am Franz. She met me yesterday unt told me of her father's back."

"Did you hear the music," Bennedict asks, "I assume you think she has something to do with the drownings, either perpetrator or victim?"
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

The girl looks up from her work at the counter, smiles at Kat, and covers the basket with a square of cheesecloth.
"Good morning, madam! "
"Good morning! Is any of your bread ready to eat? It smells so delicious I could do with some breakfast!"

She relaxes in the warmth of the shop, drinking in the pleasant scent of the fresh baked bread

DORGIO

The priest raises his left hand toward the women, letting the sunlight reflect on his ring finger. But not before giving the harlots a long look. "Sorry, loves, got my own fireplace." With that, he keeps on his way to Benn's.

BENN'S OFFICE
Adam wrote:"Did you hear the music," Bennedict asks, "I assume you think she has something to do with the drownings, either perpetrator or victim?"

"No music. But the lady in the water... Something wrong with her."

Ignatz slides down from the chair, disappearing behind Benn's desk.
"Hear that? Someone coming..."

The brass door bell jingles down the short hall connecting Benn's private office chamber to the street entrance. Footsteps, a fragment of words that might come from a man in the hall or someone passing the open front door in the street.

Dorgio reaches Benn's office and finds the front door unlocked. Hornsby doesn't answer the door, but Dorgio hears muffled conversation from down the hall, the direction of Benn's private office and a couple of side rooms-- he can't tell exactly where the sounds originate.

The girl, Marie, offers Kat a selection of fresh baked bread. "Hot but ready to eat, madam! "
If Kat doesn't shush her, the animated, friendly young woman launches into a friendly gossip-session. She shares a rumor about the gendarmes rounding up stray felines and carrying them off in sacks. That's what local folks say--she hasn't seen it herself. Has Kat heard about...and then the garrulous girl stops to let Kat make a purchase.
If Kat buys something...
VIEW CONTENT:
The floodgates unstop and the information sharing continues. Further purchases of any size or value, and any news or rumors Kat shares will prompt more information from the girl--who seems pretty well-informed for a baker's prentice.

TENEMENT HOUSE, FRANZ UNT MUNCHEN

The flabby man points Franz down the hall to a certain door on the other side.
"The girl stays in there with her old man, monsieur."
And then he's gone, retreating behind his curtained doorway.

After knocking on the door the fat man pointed out, Franz hears scuffling inside, and muffled voices.

The door opens a crack. Franz see's Mathilde's face in the space between panel and jamb. She looks up at him, eyes wide.
"Monsiuer Franz! Um…please, now’s not..."

A harsh voice calls from deeper in the room, in the shadows, "Get back here, Mathilde.”

Mathilde gasps, pulls back from the door like a dog on a leash. The panel opens a bit wider. Franz sees that the girl wears no clothes, only a dirty bed sheet draped over her shoulders.

The man’s voice again—
"Tell that beggar or whoever it is to get lost. Now close that door, ‘s cold out."
A chuckle.
"Come to papa.”

Munchen growls.

It doesn't take Franz very long to realize what is going on inside the apartment. His eyes narrow , fists clenching. He looks at Munchen and nods, feeling the same way. Pushing open the door, he walks in, following the sound of the perverts voice.

Benn turns and steps out of the office, stepping into the lobby.

"Dorgio, good," he says as he steps out into the lobby. "My apologies, but I have a client in the office who is, ahem, sensitive about their identity. Excuse me for a moment, I'll be right back."

He smiles and withdraws back into the office, closing the door behind him. "He's fine, an old friend. Is there anything else? Otherwise, let me know where they saw her, and I'll take a look. Thank you for your efforts."
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

Franz sees a dim bulk mounted on a shabby mattress across the squalor of the cramped single room apartment. The figure rises with a groan, a large man lit by a single guttering candle.
The man fixes piggy eyes on Franz and shouts-
“Get out of my place, robber!”
The naked man rolls from the bed and fumbles in a heap of clothing, reaching for something Frnz can’t see.

Munchen goes berserk, barking, leaping about, and knocking past Franz and the terrified girl, headed for the big man in the bed.

The man grabs a knife from the floor and slashes at Munchen, a wild, desperate swing.

The bulldog evades the clumsy attack and bites the big fellow on his right leg.
The man screams and lifts the knife to strike down at the dog...

Benn sees the window open, curtains flapping in the breeze.
His "sensitive client" has vanished.

Franz moves quickly, speaking to the man. " I am not a robber. Mein name ist Franz. I met Mathilde yesterday. I paid her a bath and clothes from the gutness of my heart." He reaches and grabs Munchen by the collar.

"NO! BAD DOG! GET OFF, MUNCHEN, BEHAVE!", he says forcefully to the dog both hands grabbing the dogs mouth to release the leg from the mans leg.

"I promise you I mean you no ill will, mein herr. I came to check up on Mathilde. She told me uff your bad back."

He looks at Mathilde even as he pries Munchen off the mans leg.

"Tell him I tell ze truth, Mathilde. I only helped you yesterday."
