No. There won't be animal masks and we will use spells.
If it makes you feel better, three out of four people don't wake up.

So, what is the legality/ethics of submitting an adventure or using a person, place, or thing we have previously had published in QTR?

You retain the rights to everything we published on QtR. You can do whatever you want with the work.

By posting on the DMs Guild you give them exclusive rights to that work (with "work" being the PDF or document being sold, including derivative works), but how this applies to previously published works is not clear, since they're not technically derivative.

If you're updating and expanding the adventure, revising the edition and adding in assorted fixes/improvements then you probably shouldn't have much of a problem. Really make it a better piece and it shouldn't be an issue.
Really, as a fan publication, we're tiny and not really something that competes with DriveThru/DMsGuild.
