And thus, I have the chance to go have a solo face-to-face with a BBEG...again. Traditions are important, folks.

I assumed that we would run towards the tavern we met Aldron...

Sounds fine. I just need to know what VARRUS wants to do.

He seems pissed off that his plans have not worked out.
He also appears very eager to learn where Elissa is and what you know about the men who ambushed you.

It's a wis check, not a mind reading spell. And not a great roll.

It could be that Aldron is more angry than surprised. He has warned the PCs from the start about being discreet, trying to control the information flow so that nobody who didn't need to know learned about the plot.

Or, sure, you can interpret it as him having knowingly sent you into an ambush. He might have betrayed you.

It's a judgment call. Do you believe him?
Your call.

But since only Adam's guy is on scene, this is all meta-commentary

Table talk is fine.
I'm not against this sort of meta-commentary. There's no player knowledge to abuse here.
It's a choice of whether you trust this guy or not, and which course of action seems best under the dicey, tricky circumstances.
