Sports? Olympics?
Re: Sports? Olympics?
Alot of old medeval sports were mostly just fighting (Stalin's hometown famously had a holiday where everyone, even the children, would just have a giant brawl with a drunk-priest as the referee). Venice had the bridge-battles where dueling gangs of working-class men would brawl on the bridges, trying to throw their opponents over into the canal (could easily port over to a Richemulot city). Savate was basically just early french street-ufc before it become more 'gentlemanly' kick-boxing. England still celebrates a yearly cheese role, where they just roll a wheel of cheese down a hill and everyone chases after it. Calico Stratico was basically italian-soccer but you could punch people.
Also weird stuff with animal. Not just bullfighting or fox-hunting, but things like Eel Pull, Fox-Tossing, and Camel Wrestling.
Mostly though, it was normal mundane stuff. Footraces, wrestling, shooting contests, rock-throwing, long-jump, and even early bat-and-ball games.

Exactly so.Rock of the Fraternity wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 6:56 am Bare-knuckle boxing in the rougher parts of town, "Marquis of Queensbury"-rules in the fancier areas. The Celebrants of Humanity might sponsor some tournaments as displays of physical fitness and skill. Betting would be frowned upon, but will be a booming industry in the shadows.
Dementlieu and Borca would dominate the sport, I think, but I agree that Lamordia would participate. Mordent, Richemulot, and Individia as well, even if their fencers are not among the top tier.Rock of the Fraternity wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 7:05 am I'd imagine that Dementlieu, especially, would have a fencing culture.
And possibly also Lamordia; even Mordenheim was required to learn fencing as part of a "gentleman"'s education. Lamordia's schools could hold the equivalent of Heidelberg fencing.

Throw in the odd Falkovnian, too, except they might not be very respected for 'needlework' back home.IanFordam wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 11:05 amExactly so.Rock of the Fraternity wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 6:56 am Bare-knuckle boxing in the rougher parts of town, "Marquis of Queensbury"-rules in the fancier areas. On the contrary I think that fencing, boxing and jousting would be very popular among falkovnian officers. I would remind everybody that canonically Drakov weilds two shordsword, not heavy weapons.
Re: Sports? Olympics?
I was curious what was in the first modern Olympics, and the events can be categorized into a few families:
Running events - from 100 meters to the marathon, with one hurdles event.
Throwing events - shot put and discus throw
Leaping events - long jumps, high jump, and pole vault
Bicycling - both measured distance and distance-over-time events
Fencing - foil and sabre (epee was canceled for an unknown reason)
Gymnastics - most of the standard men's events, plus rope climbing
Sailing and rowing - scheduled but canceled (sailing for technical issues, rowing due to weather)
Shooting - both pistol and rifle
Swimming - freestyle only, from 100 to 1200 meters, held in the ocean
Tennis - singles and doubles
Weightlifting - "clean and jerk," two-handed and one-handed
Wrestling - no weight classes, the final lasted 55 minutes over two days (40 minutes the first day before being called for darkness)
I could see rowing being competitive among some groups, even if not an "official" sport, as groups traveling along a river have races amongst themselves. Weightlifting/bodybuilding could be big among the Celebrants. Wrestling too, although almost every culture should have some form of wrestling with their own rules.
Rather than lawn tennis, Dementlieu and Richemulot might have courte-paume (real tennis).

I believe that Lechberg may have a small gladiatoral coliseum, but that may be a fan creation from the old mailing list in the background of 2nd edition of Darius, the gladiator from Iron and Blood computer game

I'm honestly disappointed no one mentioned the Rat Races in Richemulot.

Now I imagine an odd wererat who likes to participate the races pretending to be an ordinary rat.

I could see some rich monsters reenacting the plot of the movie "Rat Race".
Of course in the Demiplane, it would be a lot less comical. I expect many Powers Checks... maybe even the formation of a new domain based on the sin of greed.
