Can anyone explain to me the differences between how subraces/variants/lineages are built between 2e, 5e and 5.5e?
Asking for especially nefarious purposes.

Re: edition conversion buissness
I've tried backporting 5th Edition content to AD&D, and honestly? Sampling thematics and building from ground up is the way to go in both directions. I mostly stuck to monsters, but I did a few races somewhere. Now, 5.0 and 5.5? The differences are far more nuanced than old school, so a literal conversion shouldn't be too hard. I think WotC has supplied manuals on updating things, otherwise I have seen stuff on Reddit and various social media. A lot do have a few conflicts on how to handle playing around with 5 and 5.5, but it's always been more of an art than a science.
I muse of grim fates in The Lands of the Mists. You can see more here.
