Weird. I read and exerpt and thought it was great. 3 of my professors thgouht it was great. My teacher's assistant this term promised to hate me forever if I don't get that one... you get the idea.

However, that doesn't mean that this one, Ewald Standop, is not better. I'll have to look into it. I know I read through parts of one version which just didn't do it for me. They were trying to end-rhyme everything and keep it iambic pentameter, but Anglo-Saxon poetry is stressed rhyth, not syllabic....

Then again: your professor may simply be alittle bitter that Heaney's translation is so popular right now. Hopefully this isn't just a childish: "mine's better than his..."

I'll check it out though.

Personally, I would prefer to use Heaney's as well, at least to get a clue of what is really happening - for my Old English isn't really at the level that I could understand phrases like

Mynte se mæra, Þær he meahte swâ, wîdre gewindan and on weg Þanon fleón on fen-hopu; wiste his fingra geweald on grames grâpum.

I have Greenblatt on my list as well. As for Oscar Wilde, I pretty much own everything he's ever written... except, come to think of it, those dialogues...

Will in the World is just that latest biography. I don't know all that much about it to be honest.

What's a BA by the way? A Bachelor degree? What year are you in?


And Frankenstein is an absolute must. Next year there's an entire course dedicated to that book in Antwerp.

BA = Bachelor of Arts, in English in my case. I''m in my second year... I think. Well, judging by the number of credits, that soulds right.... I sort of messed up in my younger years and had to go back and do it right this time.

Also: I wrote Mailer's title wrong. "Naked and the Dead" is what I meant, as I think "Quick and the Dead" is a western.

Get this (All Ravenloft fans will FLIP OUT!): one of the teacher's assistants for my class, who is working on his masters degree on Frankenstein, is going to some university convention in the US where he will have an entire hotel conference room..... so he can transform it into the Frankenstein LABORATORY!!!!!! I don't recall which university, but as some may be able to go when he gets it made I'll try to find out ASAP!

BTW, have you read Hubert Aquin? Writer during the Quiet Revolution.
He might be controversial here in Québec, but he was brillant.

I know some of his books have been translated in English.
Prochain Épisode ("Next Episode'' - literal translation, I don't know what it's called): About a FLQ (Québec Liberation Front) agent / journalist / would be Québec or Canadian spy (I forget)... Very political yet literary at the same time.

This guy used to walk around with an unloaded (I think) gun and say he was a spy, university teacher, write journalism, member of FLQ, etc.
It would be funny if he didn't commit suicide in the end...

It's good that you mention this guy: I don't read enough French (compared to my English consumption anyways. ) I'll check him out - I think I heard about him already... Sounds like something I would like!

Of course, I MUST read it in the original - translations make me queezy.

The arts in english include most humanities and liberal "arts". Unfortunately, they haave little to do with any other arts, like painting, music. but, they do have a lot to do with history and biography.
