Kartakass: The Barovia Chapter
"I agree with Cornelius, Alex. I don't know how and why someone has trapped a devil at your body. I guess ths is the reason for your blackouts. It seems the devil manages to free itself in some occasions and since you are unconsious you never learnt it. Do you have any idea who has done that to you? To trap a devil at a human's body will need a ritual or a very powerful spell for what I know. Do you or anyone of your family have something to do with wizards or clerics? Does anything strange happen to you when you were a kid? Like kidnap or wake up a day with no memory or else?"
Van makes a small pause and then continues:
"The Count Strahd with a powerful spell has disintigrated it this time, but I don't know if the devil is permanent destroyed or it has gone back to your body ready to free itself when you colapse again. I will tell you the truth you Alex, your situation is very delicate. I swear that I'll do my best to help you, but it will not be easy. Despite I have many knowledges and I have studied both magical arts and about the creatures that live in other planes, I don't know how to help you."
After another small pause, the wizard continues:
"The best thing to do is to be sure that the devil, if it's still alive, will not get out again. So, do you remember how do you feel before this sense of darkeness or cold you said? We have to learn the trigger of the blackouts, do you know it? For what I saw in the room before, I think you get frightened. This might has provoked the blackout and the freedom of the devil. Of course this is only a thought. I believe that after this quest and after Kartakass we need to go to your hometown, maybe there we get some answers."
Van speaks looking Draven drectly at the eyes. His face is serious and preoccupied, but the tone of his voice is calm. The wizard is trying to tell Draven that his situation is serious, but he is at his side ready to do whatever it needed to help him.

Draven stares at Cornelius and then Van in turn as they speak, listening intently. He blanches at their words "Possessed, can that really be true?" he whispers. There is shock written allover his face as he looks down at his body as if trying to see if something is indeed trapped within.
If that is true then that means.....I wasnt responsible! He thinks, a glimmer of hope in his mind that brings a sense of relief. This is quickly replaced by the horror of the idea that something else has been sharing his body and mind.
His mind spinnign he barely hears Vans words but replys in a low monotone. "I did indeed feel fear when entering the castle, but I have had these blackouts before while not afraid." He shudders before continuing. "It was a sense of dread and evil like it was a shadow settling over me, that I felt grow stronger with every step towards that place, once I stepped inside it grew to strong to fight. That place breathed evil, it was in the stones, the walls and the air...."
He collects himself and speaks again. "I have no memory of any ritual or magic, and very little contact with wizards in my life. If this was done to me then I remember nothing. My life has been tinged with loss but nothing I can recall would offer any explaination. He looks steadily at all of you as he speaks.
Pausing he fidgets with this hand, scratching again. "My past? I was born in Il Aluk, my father vanished and my mother died when I was young, I lived on the streets until my skills became enough to sustain me. It will be very difficult to return to the slain city to seek answers."
If that is indeed where they can be found he thinks bitterly to himself.

Valerian tugged at his chin thoughfully. This was not quite what he expected, but then again, something was emphatically wrong with the rogue.
"I think... you need to tell us about the circumstances of as many blackouts as you can remember, particularly the longest or strongest ones."
Something pulled at the back of the Warden's mind.

Draven's eyes take on a slightly shifty look, he seems ill at ease at this latest question. "I told you I remember nothing. They come to me at odd occasions, once even in my sleep." He is really sweating now, and looks decidely uncomfortable. "The bottom line is I dont remember, now shall we stand in this field all day or perhaps we should get going, hmm?"
"I had a dream, which was not all a dream.

Draven goes very still at the mention of L.... no he cant even bring himself to think that name. That is somehting I am not willing to share he thinks somethings are best left buried.
"Ive never been there, never. Why would I be afraid of somewhere Ive never been, that would be ridiculous." he says glancing quickly around all the while scratching his hand hardder than ever.

Valerian sighed and leaned forward so as to look Draven in the eyes. "All will be well, there is no need to lie. You are amongst friends, we won't hurt you. Now tell us."

Dravens Confession
Draven stares back, you can see fear in his eyes. What you are asking is the very thing he has tried so hard to forget all these years, the very root of his fear and self-doubt. Yet.... if it something else was in control then perhaps I should not feel the guilt. I have more answers now than I have had in many a year, perhaps it is time to face my demons he thinks with bitter irony.
He stands stock still for several minutes, then as if a descsion has been made a strange look comes over his face, and he sinks to a sitting position on the ground. Lifting his head to look at you he speaks with a clear voice "No lies then Warden, let this be the truth. I sense we cannot continue without it, although this does not bring me to your church, I still feel little faith in anything but this..."
With that he reaches into his belt pouch and slowly withdraws a syringe. He stares back at Valerian "You Warden confronted me about this in Kantora, you took it upon yourself to deny me this morphine in the misguided attempt to give me salvation. Yet you never asked why I feel the need to take solace in the dreams it provides, perhaps you should of and the incident at the castle might not have come to pass."
Draven stares at the needle, rolling it between his thumb and forefinger. "Imagine if you will that you do not know your past, that everthing before a certain day is lost to you. I am 29 years in this body as near as I can tell yet only the last 15 have any memories for me. Here then is my story."
In a low voice he repeats the following to you all:
"I told you I was born in Il Aluk to noble parents, that I had the best of everything as a child, until the day my father displeased Azalin Rex and disappeared into the grim fastness. My mother took her own life shortly afterwards leaving me to fend for myself. This may or may not be true, I do not know. I could always speak Darkonian and have always felt a tie to the land of Darkon, yet I cannot remember any part of a life there."
"Unfortunately Draven isn’t real, he’s just a costume, a façade for the waking world. So many things don’t make sense, not least who I really am, or what I am……"
"What I know for sure is that I was bought to shore in Lamordia, amongst the wreck of a ship 15 years ago, almost dead I was hailed as a miracle for surviving. However it quickly became clear I had no idea who I was or where I came from. I was taken in by a kindly doctor, and nursed back to health, however as time went on the doctor became less and less at ease around me, I apparently exhibited strange behaviour, hallucinations, and strange fits."
"The Doctor began treating me with experimental medicines to balance my obviously disturbed mind; the treatment left me weak and catatonic for long periods. Life proceeded throughout the spring and summer in that vein, but as the days shortened, I became more and more lucid and aware, and the doctor was very pleased in his successful treatment. Unbeknownst to the doctor I had been palming the medicine away without his knowledge, I hated the state it reduced me to, and I resolved to take no more."
"Ludendorf, which I learned later was name of the burg, was cursed that winter with a series of vile and gruesome murders, bizarre in that the assailant always took the eyes, but left no trace of his passing. Everyone was afraid, even those of us confined to the asylum. But by spring the murders ceased and the local constabulary resigned themselves to having yet another unsolved case in the files. The opinion of the Doctor was that the murderer committed suicide in a glut of frenzied madness, or moved to pastures new."
"I suspected different, although I had no memory of the murders, I had woken many times with blood on my hands and a strange burning sensation throughout my body. I was full of guilt and fear, yet I could not go back to the corpse-like state inflicted on me by the medication. Instead I stole morphine whenever I could; in the hope that sedating the mind would keep the dark at bay. It seemed to work and I expereinced no new episodes through the spring or summer. Yet for all its advancement Ludendorf had only finite resources, and soon the doctor began to notice the missing morphine, one night in early autumn he confronted me and accused me of stelaing the drug, as punishment I was confined to solitary quarters, with no hope of future doses.
" I sweated and shivered through three nights until one night I woke screaming, skin on fire, covered in blood not my own, a trail of bloody footsteps leading from the shattered door to the bed… The doctor was dead, horribly murdered in the room next door." He pauses shivering. "That face.... no eyes.... I couldnt comprehend, I knew it was me, yet I couldnt remember doing it, I lost my mind and it all goes blank... I awakened beside a misty road, penniless and alone I knew only that I could never go back."
"I have spent the last few years travelling the core looking for answers, afraid always that somehting is hanging over me. The morphine and the thrill of the job keep it at bay for now, but in the black of the night, I fear it will come again to haunt me forevermore."
His eyes have become dull as he spoke and he now stares at the needle he cradles in his hands. He has nothing left, he has laid his soul bare. He raises his head and look to you all "that is my story judge me as you will." He whispers.

There was a long moment of silence, and Sefi stepped forward to drape an arm around Draven's shoulder.
The silence ticked on.
"Well then." The Warden remarked finally. "I've heard many an odd and peculiar tale in my life, but this... Ezra help me, this takes first place." There was another pause.
"Well then," Valerian said again. "I won't apologize. The truth is always better then falsehood, confronation is always better then retreating."
"Well...well, well, well, well... I think it's reasonably safe to say that all that's happened, these murders, aren't your fault, Draven. So your soul at least, is reasonably clean. Your body isn't but that can be solved, Ezra willing."
Valerian realizes he is babbling on a bit.
"I have some spells that may be of use.... Van, Cornelius, Lucius? And if we cannot, I think the Home Faith in Levkarest can help us. We are on a Church mission, and you are, I believe, a lay member of the Faith for the time being." There was confidence and yes, faith, in the Warden's tone. "Worry not, I'm sure the Grand Scheme will see your way to a cure."
Sefi gave Draven a quick hug, saying, "You're among friends," before falling back to her place by Lucius.

Tarlyn listens to Draven and shudders for human inwardly. I have heard of a ritual or two performed by the Priestesses of the Spider Queen that are only granted by special favor of the Goddess herself. Whomever has spun this enchantment on Alex was very powerful indeed. I am positive that not just one individual is responsible. If in fact a Devil or Demon is trapped inside him it must be one ticked off Denizen from the hells indeed.
He moved away from the others and looked around, deep in thought. He had come a long way from Ched Nassad. These cursed lands were none friendly to elves, though he cared not for much except information. Let them find this Percival though I doubt he is alive. The items might prove useful to him in exchange from a certain person in Harmonia.
Clearing his throat he turned to the others. "Well what do we do about our Alex here? And I presume we are still going on to Immol? I'll support whatever the lot of you wish to do." His eyes flashed red then went normal. His voice went raspy then back to normal. Turning he walked to his horse and in one swift movement bent and jumped up into his saddle and waited.

William at this point is slowly cataloging the supplies in his head, while listening to Draven's tale.
He gets up, securing a few items in their respective satchels and bags before slowly turning towards the young man.
"You wouldn't happen to know the name of the ship who's wreckage brought you ashore would ya? Course, that would be a bit too easy to retrace yer steps with that information handy." Wiliam says the last bit with a bit of a monotone voice and slightly under his breath.
He places his hands on his hips, looking from one person to the next with his head slightly bowed.

"I propose we got to Immol, thence to Kartakass, and once our business there is done, then on to Levkarest and the Cathedral of Ezra." Valerian said with a certain forced jollity.
"All for? All opposed?"

''I agree with the Warden, on all counts.
Afraid I haven't got too many spells to cast out devils. I could try to dispel any magic that might bind the evil spirit to Alex. That might free an angry devil, though. Not usre if you all want to deal that that again. ''
Cornelius seemed guardedly optimistic about the whole thing.

Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.

As listening Draven's tale, Van covers his face with his hands. The situation is far more complicated than he believed. Rubbing his head, the wizard sighs and says:
"As I said, I will do my best to help you Alex. I do believe you, you are not responsible for the murders. But as I have also said, I have no spells that can help you. I can dispel magic too, but I doubt that would help. I'm an evoker, I have more combat spells. I agree with Valerian, we should better go to Immol, do the Count's quest, get to Kartakass and then to Levkarest. If Valerian says that they can help you, we should go there."
Bitting his down lip a bit, Van looks again Draven and says:
"You do have more morphine syringes with you, right?"

Draven looks round at the others in wonder. They know the truth yet are willing to assist me, I didnt dare believe I deserved such treatment. he thinks.
" I thank you all for your kind words and gestures. I feel incredibly lucky to count you all as companions." He meets the eyes of you all in turn, you can see real sincerity there.
"As to your questions; William I am afraid I have no clue as to the name of the ship that brought me. I do indeed have more morphine Van, enough to hold this at bay for several weeks yet, I have no idea why this happened at the castle, but let us all hope I can keep it back for now."
"I cannot condone any ideas about releasing the entity Cornelius, we are not certain of its nature, and cannot predict how it may behave." He turns to Valerian, "I have little faith in your church Warden, however if you believe it offers hope then perhaps there is a place in my soul for the lady of the mists. For now we should press onto Immol, the Counts mission must take precedence as I'm sure the consequences for failiure could well be more dire than anything this devil could offer..."
He picks himself off the floor, carefully replacing the syringe in its pouch beofre dusting himself down and mounting his horse alongside Tarlyn.
