"And so I call it demon."
Khalil returns from behind some towering shelves justs as Faruq speaks these words. He raises an eyebrow quizzically at the others, before placing the few objects he had found carefully on a nearby table.

"Demon you say Affendi? Hmm it would seem our ability to find and attract trouble travels with us yet again my friends." he says in a low voice with a wry grin to the others.

Turning back to Faruq with a slightly more serious expression he asks: "Affendi, where in this great city has the demon struck?"
"I had a dream, which was not all a dream.
The bright sun was extinguish'd, and the stars
Did wander darkling in the eternal space..."

Andre looked...alright, more than a little worried by that, setting down the necklace he was peering over, and turning his attention fully upon the proprietor of the shop. Think man, THINK...you probably know what this is, the likelihood of it being a demon is minimal.. though no matter how much Andre's mind was trying to tell him that, he knew it was probably just trying to prevent him from running screaming back to the misty boarder...even without the vistani...that would probably be safer.

"I..I would think your term for it is most fitting then. Is there..anything that unites the victims? Something in common?" A commonality would provide some sort of logic to the attacks, some way to say that no, this wasn't a demon, just some particularly vile magus, or some sort of magical beast...and not something spawned from the hells themselves.

It was after all, an uncomfortable thing to have so much proof of hell, and so very little of heaven.

Lia draws in a deep breath and shouts at the top of her lungs: Pharazian: "Everybody out of the room! Find something to block the door with, like a table! They're just books, they can not turn doorknobs or push that strongly! Out! Everyone out!" Putting words into action, Lia starts to back away towards the door, hopefully avoiding being run over while shouting to Charles in Mordentish: "Come on, let's just get out of here and block the door up, somehow -- the magic animating the books can not last forever! Move!"
While she keeps moving back, Lia grabs at her chest and mutters the words of magic.

(Mage Armor now active, and extended. Attempted sleight of hand to hide the casting: 9. Curse you, irony dice!)

Lia shouts again: "Charles, move!"
People are mostly panicking and not really doing much, though the Confessor has drawn his whip and is moving towards Lia. Bobbing up and down, the books split up, flying like so many arrows towards the two. Five books head after Lia, three of them making charging her, the rest hurrying to catch up. Two hit, the books thump against her back, heavy blows, but not bone-breakingly so.

'Dexteritas felinis!' Lia hisses, casting Cat's Grace on herself, then turns and runs down the western passage at full speed, unwilling to damage potentially valuable tomes.

The books bounced time and again, following trying to batter the Mordentish girl to death, but to no avail. Suddenly, there was the crack of the whip, and the Confessor lashed the scourge at one of the tomes, knocking it to the ground.

Lia charges towards the stairwell, casting False life to bolster her vitality, using the rod hidden in her clothes to extend it. The next moment, Lia is rushing up the winding spiral staircase at her full speed, her breath coming out as a strained rasp. "I shouldn't - be running - in this blasted - heat," she tells herself. "Bloody - bloody - desert!"

The books followed along after Lia in a straggly order, the Confessor coming along behind them even as Lia reached the top of the stairwell.

Bursting out of the stairwell into the light, Lia hesitates only a moment -- and then charges for the edge of the roof!
While running, she clutches at her chest, bringing the power of the hidden rod into play for the last time this day as she casts another spell.
In full sight of the confessor, spectral wings seem to burst from Lia's back, their feathers blazing bright white with rainbow edges under the glare of the desert sun. As soon as the books have cleared the doorway, Lia leaps up into the air and rises, planning to lead the much slower books around until the magic animating them is exhausted and they fall harmlessly to the rooftop.

(HP at 35, AC at 21 when flying up.)

After about a minute and a half, the books lose their magic, and Lia has 12.5 minutes of flight time remaining.

Lia looks down at the confessor, hesitating.
She makes a small saluting gesture and calls down a question: "Will this be a problem between us?" She indicates her shining, sparkling wings.

The harsh-faced Confessor coiled up his whip, hanging it on his belt before calling up an answer. In fairly good, if accented, High Mordentish, the man called up. "I think.... that the Prophet's Mercy would let allowances be made... under the circumstances. Pray collect the tomes, so they are not stolen, though."

Lia slowly sinks down to the roof, her shining wings folding themselves neatly upon her back, but not disappearing just yet. In silence, she gathers up the books and marches for the stairwell. "Thank you for the assist," she tells the confessor before starting down.

"Such is the duty of the Confessor, to protect the innocent." The Confessor waited until both were inside. "Granted.... rather unusual circumstances. You will forgive me for desiring to question you and your comrade."

"I shall refer you to my cousin, then, who speaks very well for us both," Lia demurs. "I have a rough tongue in my head and am ill-mannered."

The Library of Phiraz, Academic Quarter, Phiraz
May 22nd, 761, 4:52 PM; Day 66 of the Menetnashte Expedition

Once the books have given up pursuit...and not a moment too soon, as Charles is really not all that much of a runner...he turns back to retrieve his erstwhile pursuers. His mad career had taken him through much of the library, and his flight and the flying books together had drawn a fair amount of attention; no-one else is really eager to pick up the books, but when Charles has three or four in his arms he is able to prevail on a pair of librarians to take up the others. As a little convoy of book-bearers they go back to the room of origin, where they lay the books on a table and the librarians begin to inspect them for damage.

At around this time, the Confessor and Lia returned to the original room, the Confessor pausing at his table to pick up the book he had been reading and place it inside his robe. "Well, sir, miss, I believe I have a few questions for you now." The Confessor was a tall, ascetic looking man like most of his brethren, with a trim, neat black beard and piercing blue eyes.

"I will do my best to answer, Reverence," Charles says in Vaasi. "We are very grateful for your assistance...shocking...quite unexpected."

"Twas my duty." The Confessor said. "To begin with... who was this person you met with, and what was this about the copying of a book, and where did she go?"

"She is...well. Let me take the last question first. I do not know where she went." Lia goes to stand a pace behind Charles, her head bowed, hands folded demurely together. "She absconded with a book which I particularly wanted to see, because I believe it would tell me a great deal about her. She...is a servant of the heathen god Anubis, and our enemy. I could make any number of wild speculations about her, but in truth we know very little. Hence my desire for the book."

"Heathen gods.... forbidden books.... disappearances and powerful magic." The Confessor said quite mildly. "Had I not seen it, I doubt I should believe it."

"We are fortunate indeed to have a witness of such indubitable probity," Charles acknowledges.

"Tell me how two foreigners, and heathens, no doubt," The Confessor said without rancor, "Managed to attract the attention of a priestess of Anubis, if such she was?"

'Hell's bells,' Lia thinks, though she neither moves nor speaks. 'Don't say something stupid, don't say something stupid -!'

Sensing Lia's rising anger and anxiety, Charles continues smoothly, "We are en route to Har'Akir, Reverence, as members of an archaeological expedition. She learned of our destination in some way unknown to us, and has declared her intention to prevent us from reaching our destination."

'Aaaaarghh!' Lia thinks.

"I see...." The Confessor rubbed at his beard in thought. "I believe this may be of interest to the Prophet. And I think it shall be of interest if a few more of my brothers are near you, in case of a recurrence."

'Aaaaarrghh!' Lia thinks again, squeezing her eyes shut for a moment. 'We are getting an escort of these people -!'

"A very generous offer," Charles says, bowing. "One can never be too careful in such matters, of course. But we would be quite sorry to distract fyou and your brothers from your appointed duties?"

"And if this woman appears again?" The Confessor was not easily mollified. "The peace of the city is one of our paramount concerns.

"On all previous occasions," Lia speaks up, "she struck but once, then disappeared for days, even weeks on end. Her style of doing things does not include protracted battles, it would seem. Like a jackal or a scorpion, she strikes then withdraws for a time."

"My cousin has the right of it, Reverence," Charles says. "You saw that she was at pains to threaten no-one but ourselves, and we...we will soon be gone. When next she reveals herself we will doubtless be deep in the desert...but such things are no concern of yours."

"We are most grateful for your assistance at present, but in truth there is but little further aid we can receive from you, I fear."

"I see." The Confessor stroked his beard again. "Very well, let it be as you say. This troubles me, but with Angra Mainyu on the loose, we cannot spare as much as we would wish. However, should you ever be in need of aid, contact me. Judge Jalil al-Shirazi is my title and name, and I shall attempt to aid you."

"The city is troubled, Reverence?" Charles says. "What is this Angra Mainyu?"

"Angra ... Mainyu?" Lia repeats, clearly puzzled. "I have not heard of anyone by this name. A murderer?"

"There have been some unpleasantries, but it is not your concern." Judge al-Shirazi waved it away. "I wish you well upon your journey."

"Thank you for your kind assistance and your advice, judge, son of Shirazi," Lia says with a half-bow.

"You are most kind, Reverence," Charles says, bowing himself.

"You are most welcome." The Confessor rose also. "And if I may offer a final piece of advice. Do not stay in Phiraz over-long. Good day to you, Dhimmi."

Lia snakes her arm through Charles's. "Come, cousin," she says in saccharine tones. "We should ask the librarian to copy those books you want."

"Indeed," Charles says, not quite flinching at the unexpected gesture, which he is pretty sure (combined with the tone of voice) presages a tongue-lashing. "Let us arrange our business and leave the judge to his. Salaam, Reverence."

"Salaam, Dhimmi." The Confessor bowed his head lightly, and left to return to whatever intricacy of Akiri inheritance law had concerned him before the interruption.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later, as Lia and Charles returned to the Library of Phiraz from their brief turn around outside, they found Prof. Pelletier, Prof. Marchand-Renier, and Remy waiting for them at the steps of the Library.

"Lia! Charles!" Prof. Pelletier called, before suddenly breaking into a prolonged and severe coughing fit. The elder professor paled a bit, breathing hard as it subdued, then continued in a raspy voice. "Are you quite alright? There was some sort of commotion."

"Yes...and someone seems to have gotten into a few too many mathematical disputations..." Prof. Marchand-Renier noted dryly, observing Charles's several bruises.

"Nay, Effendi..." Faruq said, calling his memory of the eerie rumors that swirled around Phiraz. "The fiend took whoever it wished, three nights in a row."

"The first night, it slew four men who caroused outside the Nest of Many Serpents, a drinking establishment within the Lower Quarter. Twas midnight, more or less, and no good men were abroad, but these four ruffians were torn limb from limb, and their faces and souls stolen."

"The second night, a young pair of noble lovers in the Park of Eleven Fountains were murdered, not three blocks from the Temple of the Prophet, their bodies like crushed grapes."

"And last night, a good family of butchers, Makram and his wife and son, were murdered and mutilated in their home, the first such attack upon people inside of doors."

"Nobles and peasants, law-abiding merchants and roustabouts alike are under attack. And the demon, it fears no numbers, for the first four ruffians were well armed with staves and torches, and yet it did them no good."

Faruq sighed, then clearly tried to turn his mind to happier matters. "Will that be all, Effendi?"

"Don't be ridiculous." Guy waved off Tomas's attempts to protect him with three simple words. Or two words and a contraction, if one were to nitpick. "Come on, I'll help you look."

And look they did, for nearly a quarter of an hour. But nothing was found. There was a cellar below the house where meat was hung up and cured, and a fair amount of blood all over the house leading to the cellar, but no more. Past a certain point, the bloody footprints just... disappeared in the middle of the cellar.

Nor was there any way further down. No stairwell, no trapdoors, no sub-cellars or basements or anything of that sort.

"Just...dissapeared. How is that possible?" Tomas blinks, shocked. He doesn't comment on Guy's staying, for a variety of reasons. He's glad for the company, but he doesn't want the Professor out by himself for much longer.

Squatting by the footprints, Tomas rubs his face for a second, fighting the urge to scream, or kick something, or just start weeping like a child. He takes a long, slow breath, carefully releasing it and standing back up, trying to keep his emotions under control. "I'm sorry, Guy. I feel I have done you, and these people, a disservice. I hope I have not ruined the police's chances of finding the criminal."

Regardless, there are some things you just do. It's...proper. If you stop doing them, you take a step on the road to not being entierly human anymore. So, Tomas looks at the curtains, grits his teeth, and rips them off, carefully laying the impromtu shroud over each body. He doesn't know any prayers to say, and so he just kind of...wishes them well. Hopes they don't linger here. That they find rest in death that they didn't get in life.

And then, he steps out. "Let's go. Before Herr Professor gets arrested."

"We well be fine," Lia assures the professors and Remy, though her voice is becoming hoarse again in the desert heat, "but we ran into ... an old aquaintance. The Anubite," she whispers intently, "is - or was - in Pharazia. We do need to warn the others about this, once we are all back togehter. And professor," Lia continues, giving de Pelletier a stern look, "once we are all together, you need to ask Kuzan to look you over and see if he can not help you with that cough. It does not sound good at all. I am surprised you have not sought his aid already."

"Yes, the mathematicians dispute fiercely in this part of the world," Charles says, with an ironic bow and a knowing smile for Marchand-Renier. "I suppose you probably heard something of the progress of the young foreign madman, exiting stage left, pursued by Furies in the form of atlases and almanacs. A sort of morality play for the benefit of the young scholars, staged by the agency of our old acquaintance."

"I..I believe that's more than enough." Andre managed to get out, still trying to think on what they could be facing. And if they had some strange property which just attracted horrible murders to cities they were traveling to, or if it was all just random chance. Professor Theroux then looked to those assembled, as if begging to get back to the Embassy..where it would HOPEFULLY be safe.

Ha.

Right.

You managed to return to the gates of the Foreign Quarter about an hour prior to sunset, right on schedule. It was a somewhat pensive group that returned, not quite as bright and cheery as the explorers who had departed scant hours earlier.

"Everyone here? Where's Devereux, Carter?" Samael stalked along with Guy and Jervis, pausing to confer with Prof. Pelletier for a moment. "We'll be staying at the Dementlieuse Embassy for a few nights till we're ready to go."

"Kuzan, Khalil, we'll need to talk about supplies when we arrive." The Borcan organizer continued, crossing off things on his checklist. "Clerk named Emmanuel D'Abigne is arranging matters. Move along people, let's get inside by curfew."

At this point Carter returned, grinning happily. "I think I found a merchant who'll sell us camels. Say, why's everyone look so gloomy?"

[OOC: Alright, brief discussion and swapping of facts, tomorrow we shall arrive at the embassy and there will be revelations!]

"The Anubite was at the library," Lia replies without hesitation. "We have received our third and final warning to stay away from our goal. Regrettable, we were unable to dissuade her from her standpoint. That, and this infernal heat is wearing me ragged. That is why I look less than pleased, what about the rest of you?"

"There's a demon about...killing people at random, some inside apparently locked buildings. Slays them viciously...steals their souls...and their faces." Andre says with a barely suppressed shudder...and then he actually hears what Lia said "Please...PLEASE tell me you can cast sending. Or Kuzan, you can, correct?"

Andre's expression wasn't exactly cheerful. That whole potential demon thing...but on the other hand, there was a strange almost mad hope. "Lia, you can argue on an intellectual basis, being a woman of reason and the arcane. I...I can argue..well, discuss..based on faith. I can't guarantee us utter safety from the anubite, but..maybe.."

He sighed "Well, either I can get her off our case and on a certain someone else's for a while, or I make my negative confession. And as for the heat..." Andre cast the spell almost as an afterthought, words leaving his lips, as he came to rest his hand on Lia's shoulder "An endure elements. When it wears off, just tell me, and I'll provide another."

"Indeed," Charles says, grimacing slightly. "In fact, she threw the book at us. Speaking of which, we did find some very interesting information there...things that you'll be glad to see, M'sieur Maleagant. We found quite a thorough atlas, for starters. I took the liberty of commissioning copies for us. Did we manage to lose my namesake already? Who was it who went out with him this afternoon?"

"I regret that I do not know the spell Sending, but if I ever get it, I would be glad to cast it for you. And if you are planning to try and dissuade the Anubite from attacking us again, well ... I would be glad to help. This demon which steals souls and faces, though. Should we post guards tonight, just to be safe?"

"Um, did you completely miss where I gave Sam a sending stone?" the priest asked, bewildered by Andre's cluelessness, "I only spent a day and a half making the set."

Soul-stealing demons, not very nice creatures in the least. Kuzan'd heard many, many myths about them, and all of them were unpleasant. He never actually thought he'd encounter one. Every night at midnight, huh?

The priest nodded absently to Sam's request to talk about supplies and then took Lia gently by the arm and pulled her aside.

"Here," he said. He rummaged in his satchel for a second, then pulled out a small scroll case. After turning it over to her, he explained. "I think this should help. It's a scroll for a spell like what Andre just cast on you. It'll ward off most of the heat and keep you more comfortable. You can put it in your book or whatever and have it ready every day. The magic will last for a full day and night, so you only need to cast it once."

He gave the veiled woman a faint, exploratory smile.
