"...I am...uncomfortable...with making a trade of this book. This is...my opinion."
I as well, Effendi Otto. I'd rather run my sword through the foul evil thing. As for the rest, well I can't say I understand what is going on, but a trade with a fiend is always treacherous. I'd rather gut it than help it if at all possible.

"I don't pretend to understand what is going on, Effendi's. Just remember that we are dealing with, well, pretty much a certain incarnation of evil. Should we trust it? I don't. I'd rather run my two handed blade through it's head and end it's miserable life. I don't trust it and wouldn't accept anything from the foul cretin. Some say don't look a gift horse in the mouth, so I agree. I being merely a guard have said my piece."

The Courtyard, Level Four, Dežbār Keep
May 28th, 761, 2:41 PM; Day 72 of the Menetnashte Expedition

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

YalenusVeler wrote:Andre said, looking to be in one of his little scholar panics. "And does anyone know how Professor Pellitier is doing? And where's Devereux?"
"Professor Pelletier woke up a bit while you were gone, ate some broth, and went back to sleep." Samael reported with a smile that didn't nearly reach his eyes. "Kuzan said that he should be able to move safely in twenty four hours."

"Now, with all due respect..." The Borcan said with just a touch of acid in his tone. "What in the Legion's Name is going on? What did the demon want to tell you?"
YalenusVeler wrote:"Fassahd, what do you know about the Cunning Fox...a member of Set's retinue if I remember properly. And whatever you do, do NOT use his name."
Fassahd blinked twice, thinking about the request for a long minute, considering it perhaps, before regretfully shaking his head. "Many pardons honored professor. But the title is unfamiliar to me."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was about as far as the discussion reached when a slight...commotion...broke up the conference.

Most of you were looking at each other or at Samael and Fassahd, who had not moved from their spot. No one but Lia, unfortunately, was looking behind you towards the main Keep building. This proved slightly unfortunate.

With a movement like a snake, Samael's hand raced into his jacket and brought out a sizeable pistol. "Lia, down!"

The Borcan fired, and you spun to see a dark red, ugly shape scuttle with break-neck speed down the side of the keep. The shape was human vaguely, but it climbed down the wall head first, its movements more like some kind of bizarre insect. It shuddered as the pistols barked sharply, but didn't slow or swerve, though viscuous black blood bled from heaping wounds in its back.

The unliving corpse jumped off the wall, a full forty feet off the ground, and somersaulted through the air, landing nimbly on its feet in front of Lia, the closest person to the walls of Dezbar Keep.

The undead thing was hideous. Hideous beyond belief, mutilated and torment and tortured beyond what even the imaginative Miss Mournswaithe could envision. The corpse's skin had been sliced off with mechanical precision. Its... or perhaps rather, his eyes had been dug out, and now huge, gaping sockets stared at Lia, only a few inches from her own veiled face. His ears had been sliced off, and his nose also, giving the corpse a look of a skull with a few slivers of decayed, rotted flesh still attached.

It breathed something with a mouth missing a tongue, its breath just a movement of air. It didn't smell, except maybe a little coppery from the dead blood that oozed from its back, but instead just stared at Lia without eyes and mouthed some long forgotten words. It was difficult to understand a creature without a tongue, but with effort, meaning emerged from its words.

[Pharazian]
Listen to me.... Stop the Red King.... If you will not leave.... Help....

"Jervis!" You realized Samael was speaking, calling for the taciturn mercenary first. The organizer didn't yell, but his measured tone carried throughout the Keep. "Sarari! Edmund! Dieter! Get over here, NOW!"

Fassahd, for his part, had pressed himself against the wall, trying to meld into it and avoid being a part of this ruckus. The small Akiri man was shaking like an autumn leaf in a breeze.

The Borcan had both hands on his pistol and was circling slowly around the pair of veiled girl and dead man, making no threatening gestures but merely flowing like a cat into a better firing position. "Upon my word, Lia..." Samael's voice carried softly. "Duck, and we'll get it away from you."

"It's not attacking...?" Tomas moved before he thought, sword pulled out, shield muscled into place, legs tripped over when giving away a bottle of blood kicked in with the rest of his body. Ow.

Managing to stay standing through a combination of stubborness and nearby people helping his center of gravity, Tomas looks around him, "Can anyone understand what he's saying?!"

Charles mutters, more to himself than to anyone present, "Give him nothing. We make too many compromises as it is."

Standing and drawing his pistols in one motion as the thing appears on the wall, he holds them both at the ready, waiting for a word or motion from Lia to shoot.

Readied action: activate the deathstrike bracers and shoot as soon as Lia gives the word.

Lia slowly holds up a hand in Samael's direction. "Wait," she whispers tremulously. "Wait a little ..." She audibly swallows, then clears her throat and speaks again, but now in another language: Pharazian: "If by the Red King, you mean the fiend in the basement, then I would be happy to help stop him. Your torment aggrieves me -- the torment of all the suffering dead in this place aggrieves me. What is your name? How can we help you best? Know that the fiend seeks the sefer book, the book of magic which corrupts. I do not wish him to have it, or anything else he wishes."

Continuing to cotemplate things that only existed in his mind, Khalil remains oblivious to the goings on. That is until Samael's pistol rings out.

Blinking Khalil looks to the source of the threat, his hand going swiftly to the blade at his belt. Then he sees it... The hand stalls, his face pales and he stares in morbid fascination at the faceless one.

Hearing its tortured speech, Khalil shudders then in a grating whisper, he plucks up his tattered courage and addresses the dead man.

[Pharazian] "Such pain, such torment, how can we release you?"
"I had a dream, which was not all a dream.
The bright sun was extinguish'd, and the stars
Did wander darkling in the eternal space..."

Andre shifted into speaking Pharazian "If we help you, your suffering will end...how do we help you?" His voice ringed with suprising concern for the corpse before them. He then blinks, and asks a rather pertinent question Pharazian "Who..are..were you?""

Otto's free hand jumps to his holster upon seeing the...thing, but moved off soon afterward; aware that another situation was going on which he had absolutely no control over, the gunsmith simply stood still and rigid, willing himself to spontaneously learn Pharazian.

Ishaq recoiled from the sight of the thing. Gripping his two handed blade tightly in both hands, he moved away from it, horrified by it's mere presence. He asked whoever knew the answer, first in Pharazian then Mordentish "Who is the red king???? And this thing says it needs our help! I'd as soon as much rid oursleves of the sorry thing." Ishaq looked ready to act on his words, truely unnerved by the whole scene.

Samael cast a long, very tired, look at Lia. Then, very slightly, he lowered the pistol, though you'd already seen he had the reflexes of a lightning bolt. "This is insane... No, I'm insane. This is all a dream somewhere in the Mikki sanitarium... That's the only thing that makes sense."

The unliving corpse, meanwhile, seemed to ignore the myriad questions tossed at it. Instead, he stood there for a long minute before Lia, as if considering how to proceed. And then, he moved.

[Pharazian]
"Forgive me... I can do no else."

Then with a speed of movement to shame even Samael, the creature clasped both hands around Lia's head and pulled the Mordentish girl closer. Dessicated lips brushed the veil, and a dead breath passed.

A breath laden with memories. In the veil between life and death Lia stood, and remembered.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By the prophet, dying hurt. I knew it would, but even in my worst nightmares I never thought it'd be this bad. Why did it end this way... I loved Farideh, and the Bey was always fiddling with his magic books... I knew it could, but when you're nineteen you don't think as much as you should. And I thought that the Bey would just cut my head off, not this.

Oh god it hurt. My eyes... my ears... Was the pain worse, or the fact that there was nothing but the pain.

And memories. I still had those.

Hurt hurt hurt hurt hurt hurt hurt HURT.

Why Idris? I thought you were my friend.

I'd thought the Bey was a good man. I felt sorry for him, a bit, but he's almost twenty five years older than Farideh. She's his second wife. I know it was wrong, but it was harmless. Prophet take my soul... am I in hell already? And what'll happen to Farideh.

Farideh..... they'll kill you. I know they will. And I wish I could stop them but I can't because it hurts so much to think and to breathe and I'm dying and it still hurts and why does dying hurt so much.

You can save her from the Bey, you know.

Who said that?

An interested party. I can make sure that the Lavasani and his cohorts don't hurt a single hair on Farideh's pretty little head.

Was I already did? Were demons in hell trying to tempt me into despair? What was the point... I couldn't see or hear or anything, I know that Farideh is going to die if she hasn't already, and why does it still hurt?

All I require of you is a simple thing. Bring the Bey and his spell book to the dungeon's torture chamber. And in exchange, no one else shall ever hurt your precious little Farideh.

What did I have to lose?

That's the spirit!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rage. I can't see or hear, but I know they thought me dead. Maybe I am, I don't know. But I know they're there, and when I hit the first person with my little fist, I could see again.

I killed them all. They shot me with arrows and slashed me with swords, but I was past caring. It still hurt where they'd cut out my eyes, so what was a little more pain?

I couldn't think clear. I couldn't think at all past the rage, the need to hurt them back. I killed Idris first, I know that. Smiling, slippery Idris. He always had a smile on his face and a game of cards going, which I always think he rigged just a bit, because he never went short of pay. And I took his neck in my hands and I twisted and Idris is dead. He looked confused as he died.

I killed them all, but then I remembered. I needed to get the Bey, fill my part of the bargain, get the book to the voice and save Farideh. Bey Lavasani had a headstart, but what did it matter? I was faster than any horse, and I could walk through the walls of Dezbar. And the voice in my head told me where to go.

I found Lavasani on the bridge in that cave we call the cistern. He ran fast as he could, away from me. It was almost funny. The mighty Bey, who tore out my eyes and ripped off my skin, was scared of me? Well booga-booga-booga, I'm scarier now. So I chased him towards the end of the torture chamber.

Except.

He tripped.

He fell.

His book flew from his hands.

Right into the water.

The scream of rage was so loud, I fell back. I think it killed the Bey then and there, since I never touched him. His heart exploded in his chest. I didn't know what exactly the voice was screaming now, but I had to get away, even as the blood-red rage came over me.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found Farideh in her room. After I ripped poor Jemal on guard duty in half. I came into the bedroom, ready to save her. There were horses in the stable, and I could rip open the safe. She'd take the money and ride to Phiraz. She'd be safe.

But she screamed at the sight of me. So I grabbed her and shook her, trying to explain that she had to run, but my tongue was gone and I couldn't talk. And then... something popped... and she just... stopped breathing.

Farideh was dead. My little flower was dead. The voice had lied.

As I recall, I promised that the Bey's men, that no one else would harm her. This is a fitting recompense for losing the Sefer Raziel.

Prophet save me, but the voice was cold. So cold, and so hateful. It hated me, and it hated the world, and it hated everything it could touch. And it had cost me Farideh.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know how long I've been here now. One day is much like the next. I know that I'm still dead, but I'm almost used to it now. I know a lot now. I can pass through walls, and I can steal the senses of the living. I sometimes kill a bug or a rat that gets inside, just so I can see for a day or two.

I found the voice. The Red King on his throne of bloody mist, surrounded by his handiwork. He hates me. But that's alright, I hate him too. He can't leave, but neither can I. It bothers him more than me, I think.

The men with the funny, triangular hats came after a while. The Red King killed a few of them. I killed the rest when they started heading into the dungeons. I didn't want them to talk to the Red King. He'd lied to me, why not them too?

I found the stash of the old Bey's magic. He had spells for all sorts of things, even for breathing water, not that this was a problem for me anymore. But why bother? I couldn't bring back Farideh, so why should I finish my bargain? And anyway, now that the book's made itself a guardian, its not like the Red King is liable to get it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found out how to kill the Red King. You have to hurt his soul, not his body. He's too strong for me, for anyone really. But his soul is in that little evil book. And if you use all four elements on it, it'd shatter. Innocent's Tears, Breath of the Twice-Traitor, Adamant Knife and the Heart-Fire. And then that'd be the end of the Red King.

Some new strangers came. I can smell their souls, and they have so many kinds. A few have good souls, like some of the students or all but two of the five professors. And some have very cold souls. I hope they don't go talk to the Red King, these cold souls. I'd have to kill them.

I can still hear Farideh sometimes. I think her ghost sings in these halls, but I can never find her.

And it still hurts.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a second, the transfer was complete, and Lia stood somewhat dazed as the undead soldier... Ishmael abd-Rabbo in a previous life, centuries ago, stepped back. Shots had rung across the courtyard when the corpse had moved, but Ishmael had survived far more than a few bullets.

[Pharazian]
"Find the book... and leave this place. Destroy it.... and destroy the Red King. Forgive me...

Gazing across the courtyard with eyeless sockets, Ishmael sketched a military salute from centuries past, and then... slowly... sank into the ground.

Needless to say, after that salute, Andre was to Lia faster than a G'hennan expat was to an all you can eat buffet. "Lia..are you alright? What did he do?!" His voice was near frantic as he tried to do as much of a check for injury as he could, when for all he knew, the undead could've torn out her soul.

Lia stands still for a few moments, blinking, and then ... starts to laugh. Her laughter rings out across the courtyard, cold but strong and clear. "I am well," she finalls says, giving Andre a look of savage joy. "And I feel vindicated. Our ... guest ... was Ishmael ab-Rabbo, before. The young man who committed adultery with Farideh, wife of the Bey. He gave me his memories."

Making sure to scan for anymore divination spells watching before she continues, Lia beckons the other members of the expedition closer. "He was betrayed by his comrade Idris, was skinned and bereft of senses by order of the Bey ... And the fiend bade him rise up as the undead creature we have seen, had him kill all in the keep, offering him Farideh's safe passage from this place if Idris would bring him the book and the Bey.

It was Ishmael who killed all the living who were here in his own time, who killed some of the explorers who came later -- but the fiend downstairs killed others. He killed Farideh by accident, killed the Bey without meaning to while trying to herd him to the fiend with the book.

I know where to find the Sefer Raziel HaMalakh. There is magic here which can help us get to it. And I know what can destroy it; the clues we have been told, of the innocent's tears, the breath of the twice-traitor, the adamant knife and heart's fire, those are all what is needed to destroy the book. And if we destroy the book, we put paid to that fiend in the basement. It holds his soul."

Lia glances at Kuzan. "Ishmael attacks people and creatures to steal their senses, so he can see, hear ... He is in constant torment. He did commit adultery, but did not see the harm -- she was much younger than the Bey. The punishment is in excess of the crime, methinks. And the fiend ... hates everything, everyone. It is at the core of all this misery, if Andre's, Otto's and my own observations in the Near Ethereal are any indication, and I know they are.

We must find the book, claim it from the guardian it has created to guard itself. We must destroy it. We must cleanse this place once and for all. Let all the tormented dead rest, and let the evil be banished. I know this is yet another unreasonable request to make of a scientific expedition, but I do not feel we can walk away anymore. There is too heavy a burden on this place, and the binding spells on the damnable fiend weaken. In time, it will be able to reclaim its soul, itself, and this world will suffer for it. And we are in this world, also, no?"

"Otto...I know you know your metallurgy...what's the material that blade we found in the armory made of?" Andre asked almost as an aside as he listened to Lia share what had been given to her.

"Terrible way to go...If it'll put him to rest..I'm inclined to go with no deal. Especially considering the source of the information offered.."

"Adamantium it is, definitely." The question seemed to snap Otto back into focus, following as it did Lia's comprehensive laying-out of facts; now that a clear-ish timeline and course of action had resolved itself in front of the party, it did a lot to take his mind off being panicked.

Guess having your demon-slaying tools laid out like a shopping list tends to do that for a guy...funny.

"...And, though I made an impolite action in order to secure of it--forgive me, Tomas--the wine bottle over which so much has been made *may* contain the breath of a twice-traitor, now that it has been stoppered; the air within that cavern was thick with the smoking of the fiend, and...I had a hunch."

He frowned, shaking his head slightly. "However, that at best is leaving us two out of four...and with little of time left to discover the remainings. ...The only 'heart' that is coming to mind within this place is that of the ethereal bed, and even if that did not seem to be resistant to flame, I would hesitate to approach it in any case..."

"...And the tears present a problem of greater degree still. Given the horrors done here in the past, I can think of few prior residents of this keep that one might consider 'innocent'..."

"Khalil is meant to purify the cistern, isn't he?" Charles says, scratching the symbols for the four elements in the dust with the toe of his boot. "Perhaps that would be it...tears of innocence. As for the breath of the twice-traitor...Ishmael betrayed his lord once with his lord's wife, and again by slaughtering all in the keep--the breath spoken of might be his. Er...I do hope you're still on the lookout for our friend's eyes and ears, m'selle, it would be just as well not to let him know we're coming."
