This feeling of weightlessness is disconcerting Ishaq ponders as he floats with ease to the bottom of the ravine. Once his feet touch the ground, he is begins climbing but changes his mind. Touching his belt he feels some of the giant's axe damage disappear. This might be easier if someone pulls me up as I weigh nothing at the moment.

Remembering Khalil fallling in combat, and Charles close to his postion, he cups his hands to his mouth and calls up "Effendi Charles! If you can hear me, can you lower a rope and pull me up?" Now Ishaq waits to see if Charles is apt to carry out his query. Hopefully Charles isn't in any danger at the moment, and the candle has been lit by Kuzan.

Activating two charges on healing belt 3d8 for 15 points of healing. Saving his brute gauntlets for the giant in case all goes to hell in a handbasket!

As he waits for Charles to respond, Ishaq begins scaling the wall as fast as he possibly can, images of a dead Khalil and other expedition members deceased urging him on.

Climbing fast for a DC of 20. Ishaq has a 7 rank, add +1 from prayer, rolled a 18 for a total of 26! Go me go!

Despite the oxygen deprivation, Otto's vision clears and focuses as the windstorm about the statue dies; mind winnowing a host of ill-advised tactics and off-center firing angles down to a single, feasible opportunity.

It comes down to time, in the end. Delay a ranged specialist for thirty seconds when all you have to do is waste a minute, and bingo: one irrelevant fey-touched gunsmith.

But if that gunsmith has an extra bit of time up his sleeve...

Fighting against his own lungs, Otto sucks in the deepest breath he can manage and shunts all his power into his lower body, sprinting along the canyon ledge faster than should be possible. A command word is barked, nearly lost on the wind, and then an explosion of blue sparks and a bell-like peal, as if the wolf-man had been some electric cannonball shot from a enchanted siege gun.

----

One cold-iron bullet, one target, and three extra seconds. All the time in the world. Brace... Aim...

----

--CRACK--

OOC: Breathing, then sprinting up to U9 and burning a charge of the Skirmisher boots for an extra attack with Donnenschlag (which means only one attack in total since I used up my normal standard action not suffocating, but I'll take 'em where I can get 'em at this point). Aimed at Malice: 72 to bypass incorporeality, 35 to hit (!), for 20 damage with a cold iron bullet.

Statue of Beyrath, The Mazes, The Kermanevar, Sebua
June 24th, 761, 8:21 PM; Day 99 of the Menetnashte Expedition

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

PC Actions:
Ishaq has fallen, heals himself for 15 HP, then heads back up 35 feet or so.
Lia casts a fireball, Giant saves, takes 13 damage.
Otto attacks Malice, deals 20 damage.
Andre survives miraculously, attempts to Dispel the giant, fails.
Charles steps back and fires at Malice, dealing 11 damage.
Kuzan begins concentrating.
Khalil proceeds to bleed.
Tomas is falling.

Kage wrote:Let me end this, stop this pointless fight. Put an end to this thing we shouldn't even be involved with anyway. Prevent senseless deaths, deaths that serve no purpose.

Kuzan took the candle in his hand and focused.
Malice noted the fact that the Candle of Balefire seemed to have levitated a few inches. Or perhaps she'd known where Kuzan was all along, she'd seen him disappear earlier. Regardless, the Faerie Courtier leveled a single finger at Kuzan. "Thought I'd forgotten about you?"

The coil of wind lashed forward, engulfing the Priest of Varuna in its fetid embrace. There was a sickly-sweet scent to this wind, something foul as it proceeded to strip away the layers of magical protection the mortals had placed upon this one man. Magical invisibility was the first to depart, followed by flight, and speed, and that spark of magical concentration. Andre's ward of protection was gone, as was the ward Kuzan had set about himself moments ago. Only the prayer and blessing remained, and they felt feeble alongside this malevolent wind. Then it was gone, and Kuzan was still alive, if feeling a bit naked shorn of all his spell-protections. Still, he concentrated on the candle.

At least, until the greataxe interrupted him slightly.

===============================================
Rock wrote:"Do not turn your back on me," Lia growls beneath her breath, "you miserable wretch!"
The crimson burst of flame erupted on the cloud giant's back, burning away the cloud-stuff that was his form. For a moment, it seemed as though the entity was simply engulfed in fire, obscured from sight. And then it faded... and the giant still stood. There wasn't much of him left, really. The giant was mostly transparent now, with only wisps of cloud-stuff still maintaining some semblance of form and function. He looked as though a stiff wind would knock him over.

His axe, however, was still lethally sharp and quite solid. It was this massive blade which swung at Kuzan. It was a poor blow, owning nothing of the grace and power which had been the giant's hallmark before. It still hit though.

Enemy Actions:
Malice makes her Sanctuary save, and throws a Targeted Psionic Dispel at Invisibility (CL 3), Fly (CL 8), Haste (CL 8), Mass Conviction (CL 8), Bless (CL 9), Prayer (CL 9), Divine Insight (CL 9), Sanctuary (CL 9), Greater Resistance (CL 9), Longstrider (CL 9). Malice dispels all of them except Prayer, Bless, and Greater Resistance, which remain. Everything else is down.

The Cloud Giant hits Kuzan with an Awesome Blow. Deals only 20 damage, so DC 20 Reflex save or be knocked backward into Q16 (and, obviously, interrupting concentration). If you do make the save, it's still a DC 30 Concentration check now.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PC Overview: Haste (+1 AB, AC, Reflex, +30 ft., +1 Attack when Full Attacking), Mass Conviction (+3 Morale to Saves), Bless (+1 morale on attack rolls), Prayer (+1 luck bonus to all attack rolls, saves, skill checks and ability checks. Enemies also suffer -1 luck penalty to the same rolls),
Kuzan: [Also no Haste or Mass Conviction]
Tomas: Endure Elements, Feather Fall, -66 HP
Otto: Bite of the Werewolf, Crisis of Breath
Charles: Feather Fall
Lia:
Ishaq: -16 HP, Feather Fall
Khalil: -44 HP, Dying.
Andre: +24 Temp HP (Amulet of Tears)

Monster Overview:
Spite: DISSIPATED
Malice: Psi-Buff, -31 HP
The Cloud Giant: -110 HP

Image

Purple Area: Thick, grasping mist. Creatures within that mist have their speeds reduced to 5 ft. (Haste notwithstanding), and suffer a -2 to AC and AB. The only exception is if you can fly out of it, levitate, or similarly put yourself above the mist.

"Time to call in the reserves..." Andre muttered to himself, as he started the task of candle lighting, since Kuzan had apparently decided to take a little vacation over the edge of a cliff. Inopportune time, really..but one never knows when the urge to travel will strike. Though it mysteriously resembling a giant axe was one beyond the ken of mere mortals.

"Malice, Oh star of my heart, care to consider ignoring this, like I so kindly ignored you leaving me literally breathless earlier today?" The question was one he likely knew the answer to, but hopefully it couldn't hurt any worse asking.

Charles is disappointed to see that Malice is not, in point of fact, terrified of this new threat--he was rather proud of that shot, actually--nor distracted by his (admittedly prefunctory) badinage. She is showing an unfortunate ability to keep her eye on the prize. Perhaps he should have shot the giant after all; he's looking a bit the worse for wear, and seems to have done something truly unfortunate to Kuzan.

It's just that it takes so long to get anywhere in this muck, which is lending a whole new meaning to "pea-soup fog". Fortunately, the giant has his back to him now, which offers new scope for action...or would, if everyone weren't busy concentrating on the candle. Which is the important thing, of course, but it's just a bit annoying to realize that now they have the enemy surrounded and can't take advantage of their tactical situation.

Shrugging mentally, Charles struggles forward, his hands going through a practiced series of motions; reach into the pocket for powder and shot, powder, tamp, shot, and ready.

Loading a pistol with cold-iron shot and moving to Y17.

"I said!" Lia roars as she raises her hands in the gestures of spellcasting, "Do! Not! Turn! Your! Back! On! Me! You filthy beast!" Slashing both hands through the air, Lia shouts the words of power: "Sagittae magicae, omne errore vacuae, volete!" Miniature bolts of energy shoot forward at the giant -- then abruptly split. Two darts of howling energy slam into the giant's back, but two others veer off and punch into Malice's body. "That's right, I'm talking to you!" Lia howls. "Turn around and face me, you stinking wretch!"

(Casting Magic Missile, splitting the energy darts up to hit both the giant and Malice, for 9 damage to the giant, and 7 damage to Malice. Take it away, guys ...)

The axe smacked Kuzan soundly, knocking him back even as Malice erased most of his magic. He didn't even really have time to make a breathless grunt as he began gently falling toward the river.

"You," he said through clenched teeth, "You have no power over me!"

A cry flew from his lips, and the wind changed course, blasting up from underneath, carrying him aloft. Borne by the divine winds, Kuzan shot out of the canyon and landed by the candle.

"NONE!" he spat at Malice, "The power I serve, the being that gives me strength, is far greater than you can ever hope to be. To him, you are an ant, barely worthy of notice. So long as his power flows through me, you will never win. You cannot stop me, no matter how hard you try. You are weak and foolish, even more than your sister, for thinking you can challenge the gods themselves."

Casting my own Fly and going to T16.

In a split-second, the electric-blue inferno across the canyon resolved back into a sprinting wolfman/gunsmith, sprinting back the way he'd came in a desperate attempt to jockey for a better position.

Got a strategy, now stick with it!--

--Got to reload, got to breathe, got to re-activate the boots, got to--

--GO! GO! GO!--

--Got to think through the ramifications of layering
Haste over another subjective-time-altering transmutation effect under field conditions--

"--OOF--"

Head down, in an efficient yet ill-advised effort to reload a pistol while sprinting along a cliff's edge, Otto barreled straight into *something* large and humanoid-feeling just as his boots re-activated, the impact nearly pitching him over the cliff. Before he could regain his balance, the command word had taken effect, plunging him into blue sparks and distorted space--

----

--Whoa whoa WHOA steady, now...steady...Good. Dang--who *was* that? Don't remember any fae spectators in the area, otherwise I wouldn't have--

Focus. Settle down, stand ready, draw your target. Good. Brace...aim...

----

With an onrushing peal of bells, the world snapped back to normal; Otto, now in prime firing position, tightened his finger on the trigger.

Before being slammed into by some sort of crazy, fey-addled wolf-man, who sprinted directly into the gunsmith's stomach before exploding in a shower of blue sparks. The shot went hopelessly wide, as Otto nearly pitched over the edge of the canyon before collapsing with his hands on his knees, gasping for breath.

--Note to self: You REALLY should think through the ramifications of layering Haste over another subjective-time-altering transmutation effect under field conditions--

OOC: Breathing, running to Y9, then trying to replicate that Skirmisher Boots extra attack...and getting a natural 1. You say "automatic failure," I say "colliding with a time-dilated version of yourself due to improperly troubleshot Skirmisher Boots..."

That was the straw that broke the camel's back. With a dull CLANG, the massive axe fell to the ground as the last bits of cloud-stuff dissipated, leaving behind nothing except a greataxe about the size of Ishaq.

Strangely, it didn't seem as though the magic actually hurt the Faerie Courtier. It weakened her connection to the physical realm, but unlike when Spite had an ounce of salt thrown onto her, there wasn't any pain.
YalenusVeler wrote:"Malice, Oh star of my heart, care to consider ignoring this, like I so kindly ignored you leaving me literally breathless earlier today?" The question was one he likely knew the answer to, but hopefully it couldn't hurt any worse asking.
"I was hoping you'd ask." With a cat-like smile, Malice walked towards Andre, her elegant dress swirling demurely around her as she walked across the air towards the Professor. The Faerie wasn't as classically beautiful as others you'd met, but there was something about her that set the pulse racing.

"For you..." Malice purred as she walked around the Statue of Beyrath. "I will. But only because I like you, my mad scholar. And because now you owe me a favor."

Malice suddenly crooked her finger in the direction of the now-resurgent priest, and a bolt of lightning, white-blue and brilliantly bright, shot in front of Andre's nose to impact Kuzan upon the chest. "You are not a god. Best remember it."

The Faerie Courtier turned back to Andre, saying nothing, but watching him with sea-green eyes as the small candle of Balefire began to spark and heat.

Enemy Actions:
Malice casts an Electricity Energy Bolt at Kuzan, 26 damage, Reflex DC 20 for half.

Andre offered Malice a smile "So be it then." And then refocused his efforts upon the candle. The fact that Khalil suddenly found himself with a case of not bleeding to death was almost an afterthought. "Owing a beautiful lady a favor..some would say barely a burden."

OOC:20 on my candle concentration, and Close Wounds as an Immediate action on Khalil, for 6 HP restored.

Charles is close enough to catch this last exchange between Andre and Malice, which, frankly, strikes him as--odd, and unpleasant. And much to his disappointment, the death of the giant did not dispel his obnoxious fog bank.

But at least the issue is no longer in doubt; Andre may have extremely dubious taste in women, but his mental powers are otherwise quite impressive, and he shouldn't have any trouble with this little candle-lighting business. Which makes further attempts to shoot holes in his coquettish friend superfluous (besides, Charles might want to take a pot-shot at a fey later, and needs to conserve ammunition).

All that in mind, Charles forgoes another shot and does his best to "swim" in the direction of al-Atim, who he has just now realized is lying at the top of the bridge motionless, rehearsing the trigger word for the still-untested healing belt he had Kuzan make for him a couple of weeks ago. Of course, he keeps one eye on his malicious friend...no sense in turning his back on her now.

Double move to W16
