College of Spirits

Post by TheArcaneWeirdo »

WDYT about the VRGTR bard subclass?

Flavour-wise I feel like the creators noticed that the LotB 'Accomlished Medium' is almost solely played in multiclass with Bard, and decided to just make 'medium' a bard subclass for simplification.
Mechanics wise I haven't played it enough to know, but I've heard complaints about the Tales from the Beyond feature not being a good use of a random table. From what I see, I kinda wish there was more about you actually communicating with spirits rather than just drawing power from them. Like, at least one feature that actually makes you better at summoning and/or communication with incorporeal undead.

Please no comments that are just '5e is bad cause it's 5e and it's bad'. Just opinions on the subclass itself, what it does well and what could use an improvement.

The updated version of the college has two options.

1. You get to have a roll on the table when you give someone bardic inspiration.

2. If you spend a bonus action to expend one of your bardic inspiration dice (not give it to someone else), you get to pick the spirit yourself.

The subclass seems to be based around generic spirits a medium might contact. Same with the Gathered Whispers Dark Gift feat (which you can select with the Spirit Medium background).

The Phantom rogue subclass is able to create tokens trapping the spirit of people who die near them. At 9th level they are then able to cast speak with dead on the tokens to ask that specific spirit questions without sacrificing it.

I'm really tempted to put together some extra Dark Gift feats, like Cold One and Ghost Watcher. Those are some classic ones that need to be brought back.
The Remnants have one saying to represent loss, disappearance, exile, and death. It is Shiao Marests, "Taken by The Shadows".
