I don't know if anyone remembers it, but waaay back in Dragon #234, there was a Halloween article on this artifact for Ravenloft, which I seem to remember a good number of fans felt wasn't particularly Ravenlofty. I found it interesting, though, and given my tendency of playing devil's advocate, I did quite a bit of work on its nature and background, closely tied to my own ideas on the nature and history of the setting and Dark Powers, and eventually made it into something of a major plot point for my campaigns. Consequently, I was just wondering if anyone else here has ever used it, and what they might have done to make it fit in, and be more than just the One Ring for Ravenloft.

I had totally forgotten about this one, I had to drag out Dragon #234 - October 1996 (yes, that was 15 years ago!) to read this one again. It's nothing I've ever used. Basically, a cursed spell-book who's use requires powers checks. Five failed checks and the user becomes a "Dark Pawn" of the book.

I've never used it and have no desire to do so, although I suppose in modern RL terms, it gives people an opportunity to gain the Mists descriptor.

Incidentally, the Kargatane netbook is named after the item.

Like I said, the general feeling I got was that most didn't care for it. In my case, however, I elaborated a great deal on the nature and background of the Book and the idea of the so-called Dark Pawn, and closely tied them to my own version of the DPs, the Red Death, and the GC. As a result, the Book has been known to play a fairly major role in IMC.
