Also known as bearded devils, barbazu a type of baatezu devil.[1][2] In the wars of hell, they play the roles of assault troops, leading masses of lemures into combat. When not at war, bearded devils may work as guards.[1] A bearded is typically armed with a glaive[1][2], but the devil's beard can also serve as a savage cutting weapon in its own right. Furthermore, it can inflict a disease called devil chills[1] or a poison that prevents healing as it goes through the victim's system.[2]

However, very little of the above seems to be known to most of the Demiplane of Dread's natives. Fiends are rare enough to cause the famed monster hunt Dr. Rudolph van Richten to believe each fiend was wholely unique.[3] One barbazu is known to exist or have existed in the Demiplane of Dread. Along with an aminzu, the barbazu in question came through a dimensional rift during the Grand Conjunction, arriving in Chateaufaux. The aminzu and the barbazu, neither of whose true names are known, killed and assumed the identities of Mayor Henri Melano and Captain Domini Tisiphanes. Together they established the Black Watch and established a brutal regime of terror and evil, eventually even capturing Dr. van Richten. Fortunately, adventurers intervened, liberated van Richten, and defeated the fiends.[4] However, it seemed like the fiends escaped.

Descriptive Text

There is no house among the Dukes of Hell who have not their own guards and sentinels, of whom the great majority are great bearded devils, anthropomorphous, though with a long tail, clawed on both hands and feet; their beards are a great source of pride to such, and a devil of this sort bathes its beard in the ichor of those they have slain in combat to work them into fantastical shapes and great matted tangles; a long beard soaked with the blood of many enemies is a mark of status among them, and to be shaved is their great fear, far more than of death.
