Trepanning is the treatment for madness favoured by chiurgeons but few if any alienists. Even if a cure is achieved, the brain is permanently harmed and intelligence is reduced. Additionally, the procedure is the stuff of horror and is in fact capable of pushing a subject deeper into madness, as well as killing outright the patient.
