A criminal mastermind and the enemy of Sherlock Holmes, Professor James Moriarty is secretly a rakshasa on Gothic Earth.[1][2] Professor Moriarty ranks as a lord level in the hierarchy of servants of the Red Death.[3]
The two versions of the Masque of the Red Death campaign setting present two different reasons for Moriarity to seek out new foes and eschew Holmes. As presented in the original, 2nd Edition version Masque of the Red Death boxed set, Moriarty had become bored with Holmes and sought out new foes (as in, the PCs) despite considering Holmes a challenging enemy.[4] In the 3rd Edition Masque of the Red Death hardbound book, Moriarty and Holmes were both nearly killed in the plunge near Reichenbach Falls.
