A character from I, Strahd, the War Against Azaalin, whee Tew Yssup appears in Strahd's in character narrative that comprises most of the novel's text. According to that source, Tew Yssup was the First General of General Vychen. Vychen, possessed by Strahd, led Tew Yssup into an ambush by the Barovian military, where he and the other generals were slain. Tew was personally killed by Strahd/Vychen.
Tew Yssup is very probably an undead creature. Later in the Kargat's existence, an individual of his rank would assuredly be undead. That he responded to an ambush with "fangs bared" and that his blood smoked as it spurt over the ground suggests something along the lines of a vampire. That he did not turn to mist to escape destruction constitutes a counter argument however.
Behind the Scenes
Tew's rather preposterous and vulgar name was an act of retaliation on the part of author P. N. Elrod, in response to what she perceived as unqualified meddling on the part of her editors at TSR.[1]
