Others believe that the notion of property derives from competition for scarce resources. In either case, in most known cultures, theft of property is taboo. The transgression of this taboo by a darklord or a temporal leader in a given land could have repercussions upon the integrity of property relations and of property itself in that land.
Strahd von Zarovich may be a case in point. He attempted to steal the "property" of his brother for himself. As a consequence of this and related acts, the entirety of Barovia is now his property to a degree that exceeds that of any mundane king, but he is cursed to never truly take possession of Tatyana Federovna even as her reincarnations haunt his land.
