Heresy is at once devotion to a religion that one has no intention of abandonning and questioning of one or more of the tenants of that religion, at least as they are currently understood. Heresy is doctrinal innovation but it is equally doctrinal dissension. Existing authority judges it to be rebellion and the threat of revolution in the absence of firm action, and as such declare it religious crime. Heresy is usually squelched ruthlessly. Rarely it gives birth to new religions by ways of schisms.
