Madness or mental illness is the loss in living creatures of mental health compromising the soundness of their minds. It is a captivity of the mind, with the capacity for thought or for action being qualitatively compromised such that behaviour becomes abnormal. The abnormality admits of considerable variation between individuals but is usually fixed in a given individual. An individual afflicted with madness is a madmen, with the personality trait of being mad. The causes of madness are many including madness saves. There are treatments for madness. Madness may require admission into a mental health facility. The study of madness is alienism. Alienists run such facilities and also take the lead in treating madness.
