Wolfgang Armand Faust[1] summoned the fiend calling itself Mephistopheles to Gothic Earth and made a deal to a length of time equal "live many lives" in return for his soul. Mephistopheles interpreted this deal creatively and has made Faust live a series of cruel life-death-rebirth series of reincarnations that seem to inevitably end horribly for Faust before he can atone.
