In Curse of Strahd, Van Richten's Tower is a tower on Lake Baratok formerly used by Rudolph van Richten (aka Rictavio) as a base for his operations in Barovia. He later moved to Vallaki, but his former student, Ezmerelda d'Avenir, settled in and now resides there as she looks for him.[1]
Van Richten's tower was originally created by the lich Khazan. He weaved protections on it to keep out any magic from functioning inside it save for his own and that of his magical creations, including traps and constructs.[1]
