The Illuminated Man is an Abber Nomad, and a member of Carnival. Wearing but a loincloth, his flesh is covered in moving, living tattoos of his own making called night terrors, created to help ward away a person's darkest fears.
Note that the Illuminated Man's night terrors are entirely different things than the Nightmare Man's night terrors.
