Descriptive Text

XXVIII. The Tree of the Hydra

In a place, deep below

the lightning-wracked skies,

there is a vast cavern.


In the cavern,

grows a tree

that sings.


The tree is

crystal,

branching,

branching.


In the branches,

in the leaves,

dance visions,

near and far,

was and will be.


Beneath the tree,

pinned by roots,

sleeps the Hydra.


The Hydra,

the mad worm,

with its head

of lashing whips.


Crystal roots

grow through

its hide.


The Hydra sleeps

and dreams,

one day

to awaken

and rise

and consume

the world.
