Whereas most scarecrows are mindless, conscious scarecrows have achieved human-level intelligence and a self-preservation instinct. Most conscious scarecrows were magically created scarecrows that outlived the priests who created them.[1]
The vast majority of magically created scarecrows collapse to dust upon the death of their creator, but a handful instead gain full sentience. These scarecrows become evil and hateful towards the fully living. Because scarecrows hate fire and aren't phased by cold, a conscious scarecrow usually makes a beeline for lands of cold climates. However, the conscious scarecrow's vengeful nature makes any such journey a virtually continual killing spree.[1]
Although they don't require rest, Conscious scarecrows are nocturnal skulkers. They take efforts to stay out of the open during the day.[1]
