Archibald Van Schelm is the aging, senile patriarch of the Van Schelm Family. His senility combined with his continual grief for his deceased wife leaves his sons, Alfred Van Schelm, Balthazar Van Schelm, and Gerard Van Schelm to handle the family business.[1]
