Tew Yssup is very probably an undead creature. Later in the Kargat's existence, an individual of his rank, would assuredly be undead. That he responded to an ambush with "fangs bared" and that his blood smoked as it spurt over the ground suggests something along the lines of a vampire. That he did not turn to mist to escape destruction constitutes a counter argument however.
