Hector Vail and his friend Colonel Oliver Pendleton are outlanders now residing in Mordentshire. Vail is a detective and Pendleton assists him in his work. He maintains a correspondence with Alanik Ray. Prior to Ray's relocation to Port-a-Lucine, when the Dominic d'Honaire need the help of a detective he turned to Vail.
